For most of the 2016 election season, I had been vocally critical of Trump. That said, I was never a Never Trumper. I was convinced he was not the right candidate for the GOP, that he was running to promote himself, and that he was not a genuine conservative. As soon as Trump became the nominee, I predicted an electoral disaster. I thought Hillary Clinton would win easily. Each day leading up to the voting was torture for me, knowing that eight years of Obama was about to be followed by four to eight years of Hillary Clinton.
I eventually decided to vote for Trump, though it was more of a vote against Clinton. And when Trump won, I was thrilled. He’d saved us from Hillary. Would Trump be a good president? I wasn’t sure yet, but he was better than the alternative.
It turns out he was a good president—perhaps one of the best. Despite my lengthy period of Trump skepticism, my initial mistrust of him quickly faded. He disproved the doubters who believed he was just another New York leftist.
