Mamdani’s Socialist New York City Is Covered With Trash and Rats
New York City is getting a real taste of socialist utopias, and it smells like rotting garbage and dog urine.
While ordinary New Yorkers wade through eight-foot piles of trash and unplowed snow after Winter Storm Fern, Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s little socialist kingdom at Gracie Mansion looks like a luxury ski resort without the snow. The block around his official residence on East 88th Street is reportedly spotless. The sidewalks were cleared down to the pavement. Picture perfect.
Meanwhile, steps away, residents pushed through filthy slush, rat-infested trash bags, and reeking snowbanks that have been sitting there for weeks. Photos of the disaster show plastic ripped open and garbage spilling across sidewalks. Residents talk about dodging used sanitary pads and seeing rodents crawl into recycling bags. One lifelong New Yorker called it “the most vile thing” he has ever seen and “the worst in New York history.” Another said it is “very dirty” and embarrassing to have visitors see the neighborhood in this condition.
Mamdani has only been in office for a month.
I’d feel bad for the locals, but they are the ones who voted for this. Let’s face it, the contrast between what the common folk have to deal with and the mayor’s own front yard is exactly what we see over and over again in socialist states.
One resident, Nick Rivers, described watching “a whole army of sanitation workers” descend on the sidewalk outside Gracie Mansion, shoveling and plowing “every bit of snow off of that side of the street.” He called it “clean as a whistle for the mayor,” while a few doors down, trash remains untouched, piling up for weeks, drawing more rats by the day. Another neighbor pointed out, “His one strip is nice, but where all the ‘civilians’ live, it’s a complete disaster. The socialist king gets to have a clean driveway.”
This comes on top of the story that at least 14 New Yorkers have died in the bitter cold since the arctic blast hit, as Mamdani refuses to get them off the streets.
Actress Debra Messing slammed Mamdani, blaming him for the poor cleanup after Winter Storm Fern.
“Sitting in a taxi trying to get to an appointment. Should take 20 minutes, we are at an hour and ten minutes and counting. The streets are a disaster,” she wrote in a post on X. “It hasn’t snowed in 5 days and the streets still haven’t been cleared. Poor ambulance sitting in aessentially [sic] a parking lot with sirens going. I’m praying for the person needing emergency care.“
She added, “I’ve lived here for 15 years (this go around) and this has never happened. The plows have always worked around the clock to get the city back to working. I wonder what happened? 😏”
What happened, of course, was Zohran Mamdani.
This is what happens when you put a Democratic socialist in charge of a city and expect competent governance instead of ideology. Remember how Mamdani promised to replace “rugged individualism” with “the warmth of collectivism.” Well, the warmth of collectivism means mountains of trash and rat infestations for everyone but the beautiful people in charge. This is what socialism really looks like in practice. It never fails.
