Guess Who Democrats Want Reparations for Now
For years, the far left has chased reparations for slavery like a political white whale. It never quite materializes, but it always manages to stir up just enough outrage and virtue signaling to keep activists happy. Now, that same playbook has taken a stunning turn. Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) has decided that reparations shouldn’t be limited to people who were never slaves to be paid by people who were never slave owners.
Nope. She wants reparations for illegal immigrants.
You read that right.
At a hearing she hosted last week, Jayapal pushed this new twist on reparations. Fighting back fake tears, she declared, “They need to be brought before us, and they need to be held account [sic] for the trauma that they have created, and we are going to have to have some form of reparation for the kids and the families that have been traumatized through all of this.”
This is where the modern Democratic Party is headed. Not border security. Not the enforcement of immigration law. Reparations for people who entered the country illegally had no business being here in the first place. For Democrats, that entitles them to reparations.
The 60-year-old lawmaker, who was born in India and obtained her US citizenship in 2000, has been a vocal critic of President Trump and his immigration crackdown.
Trump’s Department of Homeland Security launched multiple ICE operations to root out illegal immigrants, but led to violent clashes between federal officials and pro-immigration protesters, including the fatal shootings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minnesota.
Jayapal serves as the ranking member of the House Subcommittee on Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement.
She threatened to move forward with her reparations proposal if the Democrats win back control of the House and elect her to lead the subcommittee.
“If I am chair of the immigration subcommittee, we will be pursuing all of these pieces,” Jayapal announced. “We need offensive actions around prosecutions. We need real accountability because at the end of the day, the people that have been inflicting this harm need to be prosecuted. They need to be brought before us and they need to be held account for the trauma that they have created.”
It would be funny if it were just Jayapal pushing this absurd scheme. However, other Democrats are reportedly on board with this as well. Rep. Maxine Dexter claimed, “The administration has terrorized our communities and mine in the Willamette Valley.” Rep. Christian Menefee added, “I can’t imagine seeing my kid in a jail cell just because of where he was born, just because of what language he speaks at home.”
This is where today’s Democratic Party is at. They don’t care about Laken Riley, Jocelyn Nungary, Rachel Morin, Sheridan Gorman, or others whose lives were cut short by illegal immigrants. Their stories don’t fit the narrative, so they disappear from the conversation. They think illegal immigrants are the real victims here.
So believe me when I say this isn’t just a policy proposal. It’s a fundamental shift toward a government that redistributes wealth on an ever-expanding basis. It was bad enough when they were asking people who never owned slaves to pay reparations to those who never were slaves. Now, they want Americans to pay reparations for people who broke into this country.
