In 2015, the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage in Obergefell v. Hodges. Many Americans assumed it was the end of a long cultural and political fight.

But it turned out to be only the beginning.

The LGBTQ movement was emboldened by the victory and demanded more. Since then, every new demand has been framed as the next inevitable step forward, and anyone who questioned where things were headed got dismissed as backward, intolerant, or on the wrong side of history.

For years, social conservatives were told that resistance was futile and that public opinion only moved in one direction. Cultural victories were treated as permanent and irreversible. Meanwhile, LGBTQ activists acted as though they’d been handed a blank check from the American people. But they went too far, and people have started pushing back. And a cause that spent years building goodwill is about to learn the hard way that goodwill isn’t an unlimited resource.

A decade after Obergefell, there are growing signs that Americans are taking a harder look at where the LGBTQ movement has led.

Graham Platner has now been the presumptive Democratic nominee for Maine’s Senate seat for a few weeks, and I’m starting to wonder how much longer it will last.

A trove of since-deleted Reddit posts tied to Platner’s burner account under the handle “P-Hustle,” which was active in military forums including r/Military and r/USMC, has been revealed. What they contain won’t be making it into any Platner campaign mailers.

In a March 2017 thread on r/Military asking veterans about familiar smells that trigger nostalgia, Platner went in a decidedly different direction than most. “I still have to jerk off every time I sit in a portashi**er….that blue water smell conditioned me,” he wrote. When Fox News asked about it, Platner insisted he was joking. “You should read the comments in context,” he said. “It’s very clear I’m joking.”

Sure. Crystal clear.

Then there’s a March 2021 thread in r/USMC titled “GWOT D*** Art,” featuring photos of crude graffiti drawn by troops during the Global War on Terror. Platner didn’t scroll past. He stopped, recognized a piece of artwork, and delivered what can only be described as an enthusiastic art critique. “Oh sh**!!! You’ve got the Hot Rod C— from Manas!” he wrote, before launching into an elaborate description of the graffiti. He called it “‘the most beautiful sight these cynical old infantry eyes have ever seen.” He said witnessing it filled his soul with joy.

Manas, for those keeping score, was the American military transit hub in Kyrgyzstan used during the Afghanistan campaign. Platner served in the Marine Corps from 2003 to 2007, with deployments to both Iraq and Afghanistan.

Platner’s explanation for all of this was, to say the least, unconvincing. He told Fox News the behavior was “s—posting” — his word. “It’s when you argue with people on the internet and try to bother them,” he explained. “So, yeah, no, it’s very obviously not true.”

The problem is that it doesn’t hold up.

It was also revealed that, in another Reddit post, Platner mocked Purple Heart recipient Pfc. Ted Daniels, a soldier who was wounded after taking incoming fire during a 2012 battle with the Taliban.

“At least his stupidity and fat ass wheezing are available for all future infantrymen to witness and hold in contempt. Poor marksmanship on the Taliban’s part is the only reason this mouthbreather made it home, he managed to make every possible s*** decision possible when it comes to small unit combat.”

Even by today’s degraded political standards, attacking a combat-wounded veteran is the kind of thing that used to end a public career on the spot. And we’re supposed to believe it was just innocent trolling, and he didn’t mean it?

The problem is that his internet paper trail is so extensive and full of troubling comments. Previous reporting revealed other Reddit posts in which he described himself as a “communist,” called rural white Americans “actually” racist and stupid, and attacked all police officers as “bastards.” He also once defended Marines urinating on dead Taliban fighters and described war as “the most enjoyable experience,” which is an odd posture for someone who brands himself as an anti-war candidate.

And then there’s the tattoo. A prominent chest tattoo of the Totenkopf — the Nazi SS “death’s head” symbol. Platner says he got it drunk in Croatia in 2007 and didn’t realize its Nazi associations, even though he reportedly bragged about it for years.

There aren’t enough fresh polls yet to measure just how much damage the latest revelations have done, but the prediction markets are noticing. Democratic odds of winning the Maine Senate race have slipped from 79% on Monday to 73% on Wednesday. While this is not a catastrophic collapse yet, the problem for Platner is that more damaging information on him is coming.

Political analyst Mark Halperin reported earlier this month on 2WAY’s “The Morning Meeting.” According to an NRSC source, the opposition research they haven’t even deployed yet is so damaging that it won’t just cost Platner the election. “I saw one of the spokespeople say he’ll have to leave the state,” Halperin said. “He won’t just lose the race, he’ll have to leave Maine.”

But if what’s surfaced so far is only the opening salvo, it’s genuinely hard to see how his campaign survives the full barrage.

For decades, lawmakers relied on Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 to engineer so-called majority-minority districts across the South. That came to a screeching halt last month when the Supreme Court ruled in Louisiana v. Callais that race-based gerrymandering conflicts with the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution.

Republican states immediately responded by taking steps to eliminate the districts that were now unconstitutional. Democrats in Washington responded with accusations that Republicans were eliminating minority representation in Congress, likening the GOP redistricting efforts to “Jim Crow.”

But Democrats don’t really care about majority-minority districts. Honestly, I’ve never believed they cared, but now we have receipts.

Virginia’s new gerrymandered map was just declared unconstitutional, and while Democrats are still favored to flip the House in November, this ruling complicates things. Movement in polling and prediction markets shows momentum for the GOP, and the balance of power in the House could come down to just a few races.

Democrats are, of course, livid that the Virginia Supreme Court had the audacity to say that Democrats failed to follow the state Constitution, but their problems may not be over. U.S. Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.) thinks that California’s gerrymandered map can also get nuked.

“Virginia’s map just got struck down. Is California next?” Schmitt posted on X. “California’s ‘mapmaker’ drew its new maps to ‘ensure’ that racially gerrymandered ‘VRA seats are bolstered in order to make them most effective.’ That’s illegal under Callais.”

Schmitt is referring to the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent Callais decision, which declared racial gerrymandering unconstitutional.

Here’s where California’s situation gets awkward for Democrats. State law actually requires an independent redistricting commission to draw congressional maps — a process designed specifically to keep politicians out of the mapmaking business. Newsom and state legislative Democrats overrode the commission entirely last year, bringing in their preferred mapmaker to do so.

That decision is now looking like a serious liability.

“California state law requires an ‘independent’ Commission to draw its district maps,” Schmitt said. “But Newsom and state Legislature Dems overrode the Commission last year to gerrymander. That meant hiring a ‘mapmaker’ — Paul Mitchell — to do it. But he drew an illegal racial gerrymander.”

What makes Mitchell’s map particularly hard to defend is that he apparently wasn’t shy about what he was doing. Schmitt points to Mitchell’s own social media posts as evidence, where he publicly boasted about “increase[d] Latino voting power” and touted a plan that would create “one more Latino influence district.” That’s not a neutral map. That’s a documented, race-conscious design — exactly the kind of thing Callais prohibits.

Schmitt tied it all together with a pointed dig at Democrats’ habit of identity-based politics: “Gavin Newsom’s map has the same problem Democrats always have: they cannot stop dividing Americans by race. Callais makes clear that the VRA is not a permission slip for racial sorting. DOJ should act fast.”

This is part of a broader redistricting war playing out in real time ahead of the midterms. If California’s map were to be thrown out, the math gets brutal for Democrats — their redistricting gains nationwide would net them just a single additional House seat overall. What looked like a rough environment for Republicans holding the House could quickly flip into a nightmare for Democrats.

But there’s a catch — and it’s a big one. Early voting in California has already started. So, the same early voting dynamics that helped doom Virginia’s gerrymander map may actually protect California’s map, at least for this cycle. Courts are generally reluctant to scramble election administration mid-process, and with ballots effectively already going out, a legal challenge may not land in time to matter for 2026.

That doesn’t mean a legal challenge shouldn’t be made; it just means that it’s likely too late to matter this year. Something tells me a challenge will happen.

Prediction markets give Democrats an 85% shot at flipping the House and a 51% chance of flipping the Senate in November. They lead in the generic ballot, and multiple factors point to it being a bad year for the GOP, yet Democrats are pushing the conspiracy theory that Trump and the GOP are going to steal the midterm elections.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who is retiring from Congress at the end of this term, sat down recently with MSNBC’s Ali Vitali for a wide-ranging interview touching on the 2026 midterms, Joe Biden, the partial government shutdown, and the prospects for female presidential candidates. What emerged was something less than a victory lap.

Pelosi raised eyebrows by suggesting Republicans could hack voting machines to alter election results. “We have to be on guard as to what they may try to do to the technology,” she said, alleging the GOP “may try to creep into the technology and create a false count.”

She added, “We always have concerns, but with this president and the Republicans who have no commitment to the rule of law and doing things the appropriate way — we’re ready.” She also stressed that “we have to make sure the elections are safe.”

If it were just one high-profile Democrat making this claim, it could be dismissed. But other high-ranking Democrats have been making similar accusations.
