I had no idea who Courtney Stodden was before this week when her accusations against former Seinfeld actor Jason Alexander made headlines. She reintroduced the world to a comedy sketch nobody had thought about in 14 years, and I bet most people didn’t even see it then. In her post, she accused Alexander of repeatedly touching her inappropriately during a 2012 Funny or Die bit, back when she was 17.

The sketch, The Donny Clay Show, was a Funny or Die parody of daytime motivational hosts like Dr. Phil. Stodden posted a screengrab from it showing Alexander holding his phone to her chest. “I was 17 years old in this photo,” she wrote. “The older I get, the more impossible this is to understand.” She said Alexander repeatedly “rubbed his phone across my breasts” during the bit while joking there was “no signal” in her head but “plenty of signal” in her chest, and that later in the sketch he cracked that once she turned 18, he’d like to take her “behind the couch” and “have his way” with her. “I was a minor,” she wrote. “I didn’t have the legal power to decide whether I wanted to participate. The contracts were signed by adults. The paycheck went to Doug. The production moved forward. I was the only child in the room. I felt so alone.”

I recently wrote at PJ Media about how chess went from being the hobby nobody wanted to admit to loving to the thing everyone suddenly wants a piece of. Before you picture me holding court at some underground chess club, looking effortlessly smooth, let me stop you. I’m not that cool. I’m just a chess novice who started playing regularly about six months ago, but I’m having fun.

I never played as a kid. Chess had a nerdy reputation back then, the kind of thing that got you shoved into a locker, not invited to a party. So when I picked it back up as an adult, I bought a smart chessboard to speed up my learning curve.

Turns out I’m part of a much bigger story. There’s been a chess boom in recent years, due in part to the pandemic, pop culture and a wave of content creators for turning a centuries-old board game into a full-blown phenomenon among Generation Z. Levy Rozman, the 30-year-old chess master and educator known online as GothamChess, told Axios just how different things look now compared to when he was growing up.

“It was not the coolest thing in the world to be a chess player,” Rozman told Axios.

Rozman also pointed that the kids who approach him now because they genuinely love the game look like the exact type who would have bullied him for playing it back in school. That’s how far the social status of chess has flipped.

Chess.com had 6.4 million active U.S. players as of June 1, 2026, up from 4 million on that same date the year before, according to figures the company shared with Axios. I joined Chess.com last year myself, and recently started meeting a friend at Starbucks to play in person every week.

Eventbrite told Axios that chess-related events on its platform grew nearly 10% nationally from 2024 to 2025, right alongside a broader pattern of chess grandmasters getting younger every year. Axios traces the whole surge back to 2020, when pandemic lockdowns pushed millions of bored, locked-down people to rediscover the game online, a trend Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit poured gasoline on.

The animation below shows a recent game I won (playing white) against a friend. I was especially proud of this one — I don’t think he saw checkmate coming at all.

Of course, I’ve lost plenty of games. And frankly, that’s never bothered me because I learn a lot more from my losses than my wins. I make a lot of mistakes, some set me back, others cost me a game. I definitely remember the lessons of the lost games quicker.

It’s kind of funny how I got swept up in a larger chess wave without even knowing it. My desire to learn prompted me to back a Kickstarter campaign for a smart chessboard with self-moving pieces called GoChess.

When the company released a Harry Potter-branded version without the moving pieces last year, I bought that one first, because, damn, it looks cool.

Honestly, most of the time, I’m playing chess on a screen because it’s easy to do so. But, personally, I prefer playing on a board, which is why I got the smart board. I saw it as a tool for learning away from the screen. And, playing both ways I’ve learned that playing chess on your phone is a lot different from playing on a board.

Rozman says chess exposes personal weaknesses fast: impatience, excessive aggression, ego, poor stress regulation. The game forces you to fix them or keep losing. I’ll vouch for that. Chess is genuinely good brain exercise. It’s also addictive.

What I’ve come to love most about chess is the logic of the game. Every piece has its rules. A bishop stays on its color forever. A knight moves in that stubborn L-shape. No amount of wishing changes that. I still don’t quite get the en passant rule, but still, in the end, chess is a structure, pure and rigid game. And yet, when you stack the rigid rules together and you get something with infinite possibilities.

Graham Platner is done pretending. The communist Nazi rapist who spent months building a populist crusade against Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) has officially withdrawn from Maine’s Senate race, the Secretary of State’s office confirmed late Friday afternoon, and he made sure his exit was every bit as insufferable as his campaign.

Platner suspended his campaign earlier this week after a former girlfriend accused him of rape, an allegation he denies.

Make no mistake about it, Platner didn’t leave quietly.

In his official withdrawal letter to the Maine Department of the Secretary of State’s Division of Elections, he framed his exit as some kind of populist sacrifice rather than a retreat from a rape allegation. “My name may have been on the ballot, but that ballot line belongs to the people of Maine,” Platner wrote. “As such, please consider this notice as my official withdrawal from consideration for this office.”

Then came the sign-off. “F\*\*k ICE. Free Palestine. Up the Hearts,” Platner wrote, closing his letter with “Solidarity forever.”

What a jackass.

The Republican National Committee wasn’t in a forgiving mood. “Republicans have been sounding the alarm about Graham Platner for months and today he exited the race without taking any accountability,” RNC spokesperson Kristen Cianci said in a statement. “Instead, he declared himself kingmaker and his successor the carrier of his legacy – too bad his legacy is one of a sick Nazi rapist.”

Curiously, the withdrawal came early.

Axios reported that Platner privately told his campaign staff Wednesday night that he planned to file paperwork Monday to formally withdraw from the Democrat primary, the same deadline the state gives Democrats to be able to select a replacement to appear on the ballot. He made those comments shortly before publicly announcing he was suspending his campaign. “On Monday … I intend to file the requisite paperwork with the Secretary of State to remove my name from the ballot,” Platner said, according to a person on the call.

That decision to wait until the last possible moment raised eyebrows. Liam Kerr, co-founder of the center-left Welcome PAC, told Axios it “seems like people are underrating the odds he just doesn’t file the actual withdrawal.”

I honestly thought Platner’s beef with his own party might have kept him from withdrawing at all, leaving Democrats stuck defending him whether they liked it or not.

In the end, he filed the paperwork.

So, it’s over. Or is it? He may not be the candidate anymore, but don’t expect Graham Platner to disappear quietly into the Maine woods. Something tells me he’ll still be a thorn in the Democrat Party’s side long after his name comes off that ballot.

Watching Graham Platner’s campaign implode in real time has been, I have to say, very amusing. Frankly, it was inevitable. The fact that he had a Nazi tattoo for nearly twenty years alone was enough to know he was bad news, and Democrats would have been smart to have abandoned him last year.

But, instead, we got a steady trickle of scandals, and the party did nothing about it. Yet this week, practically overnight, the same politicians who had shrugged off scandal after scandal suddenly demanded his resignation after Politico reported that a former girlfriend had accused him of rape. Democrats are releasing statements citing the new allegations as the reason for withdrawing their endorsements and demanding that he drop out.

But the rape allegation isn’t the real reason they are abandoning Platner.

The Department of Homeland Security logged nearly 300 deportation flights in May 2026, marking the highest single-month total since President Donald Trump returned to office in January 2025 and, by all accounts, the highest ever recorded. That figure is more than double the 126 flights logged during Trump’s first full month back in power, a data point drawn from Human Rights First’s ICE Flight Monitor, which tracks federal immigration enforcement flights.

Since January 2025, the Trump administration has conducted roughly 3,000 deportation flights total, removing nearly 900,000 illegal immigrants by air alone, according to a DHS spokesperson. May’s 296 flights represent nearly 10% of that entire 16-month operation, compressed into a single month.

According to an analysis by America First Insight, the Trump administration averaged 700 daily deportations before the implementation of the One Big Beautiful Bill, after which the rate doubled to roughly 1,400. The pace under the new DHS Secretary. Markwayne Mullin has reached around 2,400 deportations per day.

Congressional Republicans passed the One Big Beautiful Bill last summer, delivering an extra $191 billion to DHS for immigration and border enforcement through September 2029. DHS official Jaclyn Rubino told the Border Security Expo that the agency is “frontloading” 75% of that allocation by September, with funding directed toward personnel, detention expansion, new technology, and data sharing. Of the targeted 10,000 new ICE agents, about 7,000 are already on board, with 3,000 more in training.

Mullin was confirmed as DHS Secretary roughly two months before May’s record-setting performance, and the surge appears directly tied to his tenure. America First Insight credits Mullin’s leadership for the increase.

“Pretty interesting things we are seeing coming out of Mullin’s deportation style. It’s more quiet, but it seems to be doing pretty good on removals,” America First Insight noted on X.

“You’re going to see a lot more arrest activity throughout the whole country,” White House border czar Tom Homan promised on Monday. “We got almost 700,000 illegal aliens with criminal records walking the streets of this country, mainly because the sanctuary cities released them. But we got a lot of work to do.”

Since Trump returned to power, 3 million illegal aliens have either been involuntarily removed or self-deported under enforcement pressure. DHS puts the voluntary departure number at 2.2 million on its own, with another 900,000 removed on government aircraft. The administration credits this sustained pressure with delivering what the White House describes as the first net-negative immigration outcome in 50 years — every U.S. metro area recording net-negative migration for the first time in half a century.

Homan has made clear the administration has no intention of easing off. “We’re going to continue to surge resources, especially to sanctuary cities, because we know we have a problem there,” he said in May. “I expect the numbers to increase while the border numbers continue to decrease.” The enforcement infrastructure is in place, the money is committed, and the agents are being hired. By Homan’s own framing, May 2026’s record may be a floor, not a ceiling.

Republicans control the House, the Senate, and the White House. And yet the SAVE America Act, the bill requiring proof of citizenship to register for federal elections, has been sitting in legislative limbo for months. The House already passed it. Polling shows the public overwhelmingly supports it. Common sense says it should be a layup.

It isn’t, and the reason may have very little to do with arithmetic.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) sits on a 53-seat majority and still can’t get the SAVE America Act to the floor for a vote that sticks. The bill, which the House passed 218-213 in February, is remarkably simple: it requires proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in federal elections and a photo ID to cast a ballot. Heck, it’s not just simple, it’s common sense. It’s the kind of election-integrity measure that should unite both parties. Of course, Democrats are adamantly opposed to election integrity. But Republicans have spent years demanding election integrity, yet for some reason, they’re not united behind the SAVE America Act. Heck, Thune talks about it like it’s a fight worth having while acting like it’s already lost.

In 2015, the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage in Obergefell v. Hodges. Many Americans assumed it was the end of a long cultural and political fight.

But it turned out to be only the beginning.

The LGBTQ movement was emboldened by the victory and demanded more. Since then, every new demand has been framed as the next inevitable step forward, and anyone who questioned where things were headed got dismissed as backward, intolerant, or on the wrong side of history.

For years, social conservatives were told that resistance was futile and that public opinion only moved in one direction. Cultural victories were treated as permanent and irreversible. Meanwhile, LGBTQ activists acted as though they’d been handed a blank check from the American people. But they went too far, and people have started pushing back. And a cause that spent years building goodwill is about to learn the hard way that goodwill isn’t an unlimited resource.

A decade after Obergefell, there are growing signs that Americans are taking a harder look at where the LGBTQ movement has led.
