Yes, That Was Me

By Matt Margolis | March 26, 2004

Things got a little rough in Boston last night:

A brawl erupted between opponents and supporters of President Bush last night behind police barricades a block from his fund-raiser at the Park Plaza Hotel.

Two Bush supporters, twin brothers Matt and Aaron Margolis, traded blows at the corner of Arlington and Boylston streets with several men who they said were union members.

The fight started after a man wearing an Ironworkers Local 7 sweatshirt, perched atop a subway entrance, repeatedly taunted the brothers.

“They told us to get out of here or we’d get beaten up,” said Matt Margolis, 24, of Beverly.

“I said, `I support your freedom of speech - please support mine. Come on down and we can have a conversation.’

“He jumped down and swung on my brother. Then they all jumped in and tore our signs apart.”

More to come on this later…

UPDATE: PHOTOS!!!
UPDATE 2: Tyler at Pardon My English, (who was there with us) has a write up of what happened. Mine is on the way.
UPDATE: 3: My full account of the brawl (or on Blogs For Bush.)

I think Bush made it clear that he finds the WMD issue as nothing more than something to laugh about. If someone wants to spit in the faces on the 911 families and the relatives of the GI’s killed in iraq and Afghanistan. Imagine! Making jokes while people died over it. How horrible and very unbecoming a president of the greatest nation on this planet. And remember ‘bring em on’? How irresponsible.

yes not one. I know he can’t go to all of them but he could at least do something to honor them somehow. It’s disgraceful when you consider that he even blocks all coverage of the dead returning home after giving it their all. Like he’s ashamed or something. I think when it comes to war it’s best to have a leader who understands and has been in combat before.

Yeah it’s funny how he tries to portray himself as this downhome, country boy, military type man. He’s never even been to war. He’s a rich brat. The fact that he went to the national guard really doesn’t matter. It was widely recognized as a way for rich kids to get out of Vietnam. Even most conservatives will agree with that.

Nice to see all that compassion on display by the supporters of the Party of Love ™. You guys (and I mean you crazy, liberal hamsters) have no clue what real democracy is all about. Having debated several of these moonbats, I can tell you that thee are two strategies employed: 1) Misdirection - I call this one the Cochrane Manuever after the famous OJ lawyer - basically the liberal changes the subject when it is apparent they are losing…which doesn’t take long; or 2) The Shout Down - or the Jesse Jackson Manuever - in which the liberal just continues to carry on nonsensical dialogue while someone else is trying to get their point accross. That last one is also sometimes called the “Crushing of Dissent” and I have never seen such a literal application of this liberal doctrine.

John Kerry should denounce this kind of behavior, but I know he lacks the moral courage and vision to do so.

Very well put, GMO. I must say, the trolls are out in force today. I , for one, would bet Matt is loving it. As for the trolls, union thugs try to intimidate Bush supporters and — surprise, surprise! — the Bush supporters stand their ground, and the best the trolls can come up with is tired cant and cliche about Bush as some form of rebuttal? Please. Oh no! Bush made a self-deprecating remark about WMD! How insensitive to the soldiers fighting in Iraq! I think Smash put the lie to that one. And besides, how DARE anyone speak ill of union workers! Don’t they understand that union workers are the foundation on which this country was built!? Well, yeah, maybe in the 1930’s. Apparently some people don’t understand the concept that –gasp! — things change over time. Someone take a look at James Hoffa (take your pick, although, good luck finding the OTHER one!)and tell me that unions represent the little guy fighting against a corporate oligarchy. Keep up the good work, Matt and Aaron! It’s fun to see all of these self-righteous “individuals” forced to defend their positions, as if they were somehow putting forward an original (or even coherent!) point of view.

    March 28th, 2004 at 1:50 pm

You know. If Matt is really worried about getting beaten up by more “leftist thugs” he needs more training in hand to hand combat.

My suggestion. Matt can go down to any recruiting station in Boston, sign up for the Marine Corps, go through Paris Island, spend a few years in Baghdad, and he’ll come back quite ready to take care of himself.

So when are you enlisting Matt?

  50. Matt Margolis Says:
    March 28th, 2004 at 2:14 pm

I’d love to know why enlisting is the answer to everything? One attitude I saw of the lefties in Boston was that they were “patriotic” for dissenting against Bush while supporters of Bush have to put their money where their mouth is and enlist. Do I need to enlist to support the war? No. Does anyone need to enlist to prove their patriotsm? No. Enlisting is not about making a political statement.

I know a number of veterans, and let me tell you, none of them tell me I have to prove myself by enlisting. I would guess they’d consider that insulting too.

If I have to enlist to show my support of the war (which many lefties did press pro-Bush people to do) Then John Kerry should live as a poor man before he pretend like he really supports and advocates them.

By all means tell John Kerry to give up his fortune and live on welfare… I look forward to hearing Kerry’s response to that.

  51. SWR Says:
    March 28th, 2004 at 2:19 pm

I’m not saying enlisting is the answer for everything, but think about it.

If you and your supporters at FreeRepublic are so concerned about the threat leftist thugs now and in the near future pose to good, clean cut American patriots, then it’s really your responsibility, no your duty to get as much military training as possible.

So when are you signing up? I guarantee you that a few months in basic would give you the skills you need to handle yourself at International Answer rallies.

  52. SWR Says:
    March 28th, 2004 at 2:23 pm

BTW. Your logic about John Kerry is a bit off.

It’s quite the traditional practice for would be patriots from Imperial states to serve in the military and that military service would be looked at as an important qualification for government service.

Think of the Roman or British empires. When Winston Churchill was just about your age, he was being held in a Boer prison camp. When George Orwell was just about Andrew Sullivan’s age, he was serving as a common soldier in Spain.

Kerry went though that baptism of fire. Bush probably regrets he didn’t.

  53. Matt Margolis Says:
    March 28th, 2004 at 2:30 pm

my actual concern is that peopel out there feel the need to resort to violence in order to intimidate others who don’t agree with them. I can take care of myself and if I take a few punches, or get injured, then so be it. How I choose to be prepare myself in the future is my own choice.

Your suggestion that “traditional practice for would be patriots from Imperial states to serve in the military” has no meaning here because we are not an imperial state. I’m sure for you it helps support your point by calling it that, but it doesn’t make it true.

If thats how patriotism is defined, or excercised, then why are the patriotic dissenters enlisting en masse?

or is their two forms of patriotsm? “stay at home then take to the streets dissenting” patriotism, and “you support the country so go an prove yourself by enlisting” patriotism?

  54. SWR Says:
    March 28th, 2004 at 2:37 pm

I’m more concerned about your sense of perspective. I’ve seen scuffles between Freepers and left-wingers a bunch of times. They rank somewhere between a frat brawl and my girlfriend in a bad mood in terms of how scary they are.

Somewhere in Iraq right now there’s some working-class kid who would simply love to be in Boston right now in a shoving match with a gang of hippies.

    Perspective man. Perspective.

  55. Matt Margolis Says:
    March 28th, 2004 at 4:10 pm

so we’re judging the incident on how rough it got?

  56. SWR Says:
    March 28th, 2004 at 4:20 pm

Hardly. If some union guys roughed you up they should all get nice little summonses for third degree assault and do some community service. And you should probably get the same punishment if you threw a punch and actually hit anybody.

But I’m still amazed that you don’t connect the dots and do the obvious comparison. There are people with less money and less opportunity than you right now coming back from the Middle East missing arms and legs. There are guardsmen serving multiple tours of duty, not getting paid, draining their savings, right this very minute.

And you’re whining about getting into a shoving match that you obviously had some hand in provoking. Comeon you little coward. Put your fucking money where your mouth is and enlist.

  57. Matt Margolis Says:
    March 28th, 2004 at 4:24 pm

I’m not whining about anything. my point is that i think it’s sad people resort to violence because they disgree on something.

  58. Aaron Says:
    March 28th, 2004 at 4:38 pm

Cowardice would have been leaving after the “Brawl.” Courage was staying there.

As the person who received the punch heard ’round the blogosphere, I can suggest to you that no matter we did or said, or what they did or said, there was no reason for physical violence. They leftist union bastards started the ame calling, the insulting, the excessive verbal abuse, and instinctually, we responded similarly. They reacted with violence. We defended ourselves

Interesting. You responded “similarly.” Your brother Matt says all he did was say “I defend your freedom of speech.”

    Aaron the punching bag says:

“Cowardice would have been leaving after the “Brawl.” Courage was staying there.”

No you dork. Courage is walking point in the Sunni triangle. What you did reminds me of that movie “Dazed and Confused.” I’m thinking of the scene where one of the nerd trio plans to take a swing at some thug because he knows the fight will be broken up a few seconds after it started. So he goes for one free shot.

At any anti-war rally there are as many cops as demonstrators. You got in your free shot where it was nice and safe.

But it’s obvious you believe that you were showing “courage.” That’s what’s pathetic. In the meantime, somebody’s losing an arm or leg for a punk like you right now.

  62. Charlie Says:
    March 28th, 2004 at 7:44 pm

I was at the rally. Although the Bush protesters outnumbered you pro-Bush people about 1,000-20, you stood there and I appreciate that.

What I don’t appreciate, however, is how you label anyone against the President as a “commie” or “mindless.” You just brush off anything they say as mindless and unpatriotic. I think the beautiful thing about the rally was that there was such a diverse group of protestors. There were environmentalists, satirical groups, middle-eastern activists, the union guys, and people like me who just are against Bush for dozens of various reasons.

Your captions (or whoever is responsible for those captions) should be ashamed of themself. Dykes, commies, pillow biters. That’s real mature. That takes all of the credibility out of what you’re doing here away. I appreciate your freedom of speech, but I mean that’s AWFUL.

  63. Little Bill Says:

Dyke, Female homosexual, an old and honored word in the English Language.

Pillow Biter, I was going to use Quean, but to few in this day and age would get the meaning, never having been exposed to the Bard.

SWR: You display all the signs of the idiotiarian leftist moonbat:

    1. You make asymmetrical accusations — when have *you* walked in the Sunni Triangle?
    2. When challenged, you change the subject.
    3. You hide behind a pseudonym and don’t provide any way for anyone to contact you.

Oh yeah, and I forget the fourth one:

    4. When really seriously backed into a logical corner, drop a few f-bombs to show everyone the extent of your passion. After all, leftist belief, when expressed in sufficiently strong terms, trumps logic every time. Everybody knows that.

“support the president during wartime” sounds more mindless than to think about the government critically. How easy it is to shrug off the opposition.

If this blog is affiliated with Bush-Cheney, and I guess it is (?), that’s pretty scary that our President, the Great Uniter, would approve of such blatant prejudice as displayed here. You guys are really unreal.

I tried being nice, probably before you were born, it didn’t work, ever see the Daisy hit piece by LBJ? So about 10 years ago a bunch of us desided not to be nice and lo the Rats, as in Democrat, did squeal.

If you want civil, try a civil union, I loath the rat party and all that it stands for.

Today, April of 2005, I saw the graphic images of American soldiers senselessly shooting a car that they allegedly said did not stop when they told them to. They fired numerously into the car. When they went to check out the car (I am crying very very hard right now and typing at the same time) they didn’t find dead terrorists with AKs or bombs strapped to them. Instead, they found a dead mother and a dead father and five bloody screaming little children in the back seat of the car. One girl, was so full of blood, I thought that it was a re-enactment of the event, but it was the real photograph of the little girl with her parent’s blood screaming and crying while Iraqi onlookers and witnesses helplessly screamed and cried with her and her other siblings. One sibling was even wounded by bullets. Are you still pro-war after reading this?

How can you dignify the Iraqi War by arguing that Saddam was responsible for 911 when clearly he wasn’t or Saddam was a threat anyway and that Iraqi civilians were tortured and all that blah blah blah crap when FUCKIN IRAQI CIVILIANS ARE DYING RIGHT NOW THIS MOMENT THAT I AM TYPING!!!!!

I am not a democrat or republican or whatever….I am not biased I just want Americans and especially the “christians” who supported and re-elected Bush to be more open-minded, stop defending that rich son-of-a-bush, and to know how to handle the truth. And so I will try to put this as simple as possible for those many Bush Supporters out there. Don’t worry, I will not use “big words” like Kerry did, for you guys okay.

Bush supporters simply cannot explain why they support that moron and yes, even WORSE, THINK they know about current events based on American News Media (aka: FOX News, CNN, and the rest of American news networks; please watch BBC or other country’s news instead!)

It’s unbelievable that they base their arguments from these misleading, right-wing, Israel kiss-assing news channels!!! UNBELIEVABLE!! Haven’t they seen the short film Outfoxed? Go check out their website and you’ll find some info and short video about the deceitful Fox News Channel and American Media in particular.

But I doubt they will believe anything. Sadly, they will still be biased and blind and in denial.

Sometimes I feel like I have lost faith in Christianity of today. My fellow christians voting for that moron, hurts me more when they don’t at least try to listen and when they care more about Gays LOVING and abortion issues rather than innocent children helplessly screaming in the streets, bathe in the blood of their dead parents. I don’t like to say “Iraqi”
children because I believe when I say Iraqi children, it will make these people *yawn* because they probably don’t regard Iraqi or Arabs as humans. That’s why they’re pro-war.

To me, seeing suffering in these beautiful childrens’ eyes are far far worse than any abortion or Gay issue. These are living, breathing, walking children….

….my fellow Bush supporting Christians who God happened to let you come upon this site and read my statement….please think about it….
I am so blessed that God showed me the truth and you will be blessed too if you can just open your eyes and heart to the lies of this administration.
