‘Live Free Or Die Hard’ Reviewed

By Matt Margolis | July 8, 2007

This afternoon I saw Live Free or Die Hard. When I first heard about another sequel to the Die Hard saga, this one coming twenty years following the original movie, I was understandably skeptical. But, this movie wasn’t nearly as bad as I feared, in fact, I happened to enjoy it, despite a few instances where reality truly took the backseat to fantasy for the sake of special effects and unnceccesary action sequences.

My original antipathy for another Die Hard sequel was based on the belief that it wouldn’t be a true Die Hard movie, as was the case with Die Hard: With a Vengeance, which apparently was originally considered to be a third sequel to Lethal Weapon. Nevertheless, I still liked that film. In fact, I own the Die Hard Trilogy on DVD. For what it’s worth, had the script been used for a non-Die Hard movie, I probably wouldn’t have gone to see it. But, is it a true Die Hard movie? The jury is still out on that one, but I liked the movie nonetheless.

Live Free or Die Hard is kind of like Die Hard meets Enemy of The State. It lacks the original quality of the original two Die Hard movies, and the plot twists of the third, but it is definitely worth seeing if you’re a fan of the series, and also worth seeing if you like a good action film that is appropriate for the technology-driven time we are in now. It is worth seeing in a theatre.

The true test for me about whether or not a movie is good is whether or not I would buy it on DVD. So, will I buy
Live Free or Die Hard on DVD?

The answer is yes.
