TIME Magazine’s Top 100 Novels…
By Matt Margolis | January 23, 2006
Sadly, I’ve read so few…
I’m not sure how much credence I would put on this list, but there are a number of titles here which I do plan to read in the near future… Actually, I’ve been catching up fiction novels recently, (such as Pride & Prejudice, The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy, and several others) but it appears few made this list. I mostly read nonfiction these days.
My Bethie has read more on the TIME list than I have…
When it comes to fiction, I’m a fan of James Patterson novels, particularly the Alex Cross series… I am also in the process of reading the entire set of The Chronicles of Narnia.

[…] TIME recently published their list of the Top 100 Novels Since 1923. I was surprised and somewhat embarassed to find that I’ve only actually read 9 out of the 100 books (I was tempted to count movies, but I refrained). However, my Matty made me feel better about my list since he read even fewer than I did. Here are the ones I’ve read: Animal Farm by George Orwell The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald Lord of the Flies by William Golding 1984 by George Orwell Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee […]

It looks a lot like my high school reading list. I’ve read several. Frankly, I couldn’t make it through “Lord of the Rings.” And, “The Spy Who Came In From The Cold” is NOT LaCarre’s best novel. I Liked “Tinker,Tailor, Soldier,Spy” and “Smiley’s People” much more. Also - I’d add some Asimov and Heinlein (especially “Starship Troopers” and “Stranger in a Starnge Land.”
I’m more into non-fiction these days. “Clear the Bridge!” By Richard O’Kane is a rivetting account of WW2 Submarine Warfare by a multiple Navy Cross and Medal of Honor winner. “The Secrets of Inchon” is an incredible account of the Navy Intelligence officer who went into Inchon weeks before the Marines to gather intelligence. Both are great stories and well told.

Matt,
If you liked the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy (which is just the first book), try this. It is a link to MP3’s of the BBC radio series. All twelve episodes. Pretty funny - everyone in the family from my six year old on up loves it. It takes some turns you may not expect - as every version of the Guide (Radio, TV, books, and movie) are different.
