Lean On Me

By Matt Margolis | January 14, 2006

I recently got the movie Lean On Me on DVD… It’s different from most of the movies I own or like, but I appreciate the movie’s conservative message.

The movie, based on a true story, came out in 1989, and stars Morgan Freeman as Eastside High School principal Joe Clark, who turns the failing inner-city school around. It’s hard to imagine Morgan Freeman in a movie with a conservative message, but believe me, it is there.

The mostly black high school had virtually been written off, and when Freeman takes over, he brings back discipline, respect, and accountability. On his inaugural day at the school, he kicks out the troublemakers and drug dealers and tells the remaining students not to blame their failures on others, “If you do not succeed in life I don’t want you to blame your parents. I don’t you to blame the white man. I want you to blame yourselves. The responsibility is yours!”

Students are then expected to sing the school song on demand. The doors of the school are chained to keep the expelled drug using/dealing students out. Ultimately, the students pass the minimum basic skills test, saving the school from being put under state control.

It’s a good movie, with a good conservative message. If you haven’t seen it, check it out.
