ExploitTerriPAC

By Matt Margolis | January 5, 2006

Now, when it came to the Terri Schiavo case, I generally agreed with Michael Schiavo. I felt that he was likely to know more than anyone what Terri’s wishes were. I felt her parents did what they could to make it appear that Terri was actually responsive to them, which the autopsy revealed was impossible. I certainly believed that Republicans went wait over the line to get involved in the case.

That being said, I think Michael Schiavo’s TerriPAC is as bad an exploitation of Terri as his in-laws exploitation was.

It’s not because TerriPAC targets Republicans, but because I had thought Michael Schiavo was going to allow himself to move on. Terri Schiavo now rests in peace, but now he’s becoming another Cindy Sheehan by exploiting his wife’s memory to get back at those he feels did him and Terri wrong.

I felt Michael Schiavo, for all his faults, was grossly vilified by those who wanted Terri to be kept alive in a vegetative state. Instead of fading back into obscurity, he’s keeping himself in the limelight, hoping to profit from the tragedy that struck his wife.

Wow. I had mixed feelings about Terry Schiavo - but this is really too much.

I guess Democrats are hoping for the vegetable vote in 2006 – just like always.

Nice to see someone who realized that it would have been easy for Michael to just turn Terri over to her parents, forget it all and vanish into his own personal life - BUT he knew what she wanted and her father repeatedly said that even if Terri wanted to die - he’d want her to remain on life support. Continual investigations by Terri’s parents - have lead to people like Mike Furman and other to continually bring Terri up and usually causing Michael to have to defend himself. Also remember that his current “other half” used to do more for Terri than her own siblings. This could be the reaction to years of being an “object” in the way instead of a human being. “sink or swim?” He’s got to swim so he not forced to sink his life any further down. Not sure - don’t know what is right or what I’d do.

BUT - - I do know I’ve tried two or three times over the period of at least this last year to be added to the “Blogs for Bush” - have it posted on my sidebar pages - still am not on it!?! Shoot - “All Things Beautiful” is listed twice?!

    ;-)

Agreement, all around. He was looking out for her interests during that whole fiasco, but now he only appears to be leveraging her memory for his own benefit.

You say Republicans went way over the line with Teri Schiavo, than why can’t you understand her husband’s desire to raise money to elect people (which could be Republicans) who won’t let politicians and politics get involved in such personal and heart-wrenching matters? His life was turned upside down because these politicians made his life national/international news. I aplaud him for working towards initiatives that won’t let this happen to anyone else.

I just read Mark Furman’s book /Silent Witness/ which includes affidavit’s from CNA’s (nurse’s assistants) who cared for Terri. They state that she was responding emotionally to different interactions and that Michael did not permit any stimulation/rehab which could have helped her. For fifteen years she was not permitted outdoors- Michael controlled the radio station, tv channel as well as who was permitted to visit her. He states on numerous occassions to girlfriends during the first two years of her hospitalization his confusion of what to do about Terri. He was awarded a substantial amount of money apon her death- around a million dollars + or -, had he given up his guardianship/divorce he would not have received the money. His accounts of Feb 1990 are vague and changed depending on who he was talking to. Friends and family account for his controlling and demeaning attitude towards Terri before her “fainting”. Read the book. I had no idea- at the time I just thought- “hey, he’s her husband”
So, what I have learned is it’s best research the facts, statements etc of people close to Terri before making perhaps “liberal” based conclusions based on the right to die. Terri did not have a choice or voice in the matter.
    Read the book!
