Thanksgiving

Monday, November 21st, 2005

Well, I got a bunch of things to do in preparation for Thanksgiving. I’ll be going away, so you won’t hear from me for the rest of this week… I will say that it’s been an interesting past couple of days… House Democrats found themselves stuck on voting on a withdrawal from Iraq, voting overwhelmingly against it, delivering a nice victory for President Bush…

It’s nice to see the Republicans showing some cajones again…

Politics and Relationships

Monday, November 7th, 2005

Sister Toldjah asks, “Would you let someone’s political affiliation stop you from dating them?”

This is a very interesting question. Sister Toldjah wouldn’t have a problem with dating a liberal and apparently thinks “marrying a liberal would be cool.”

In some ways, politics shouldn’t matter. However, I have come to believe that even if you put your actual politics aside, the issues that come out from two people’s politics eventually would become major problems. I think it is safe to say that a person’s politics is often a reflection of their values. If that is the case, as I believe it it to be, when dating someone, especially seriously, wouldn’t you want to be with someone who shares your values?

In relationships I see issues directly related to politics being huge issues as the relationship gets more serious. Could a pro-life conservative man date a pro-abortion lberal woman without there being a problem down the road? What if they got married, had a couple kids, and eventually got pregnant again, but the woman doesn’t want to have the child and wanted to get an abortion? What about the children that they do raise? It seems to me there would be a conflict in the values they’d each want to pass on to their children.

Could a relationship between a conservative and a liberal have survived the 2004 election? I suppose if Mary Matlin and James Carville can last, that it is possible… but of course, I wouldn’t be suprised if the Ragin’ Cajun slept on the couch many nights in 2004.

On The Run

Saturday, November 5th, 2005

Bin laden has been silent for quite some time… We got the sucker on the run…

But even O’Dub has his own America-must-be-losing-the-war-on-terror spin….
