I Smell A Potential Problem Here…
By Matt Margolis | September 7, 2005
The federal government plans to begin doling out debit cards worth $2,000 each to adult victims of Hurricane Katrina, The Associated Press has learned.
Homeland Security Department Secretary Michael Chertoff descibed the plan in a conference call with state officials Wednesday morning. The unprecedented cash card program initially will benefit stranded people who have been moved to major rescue centers such as the Houston Astrodome.

matt i know this is off issue. but can you answer my question i have asked of you. then i will be gone from your site.
in case you cant find it in the last blog post.
“Do you Matt condone a man on your blog, to call a man of jewish faith a NAZI, if you don’t I would like you to denounce it on this public fourm”

As a Jew myself, I do believe Nazi comparisons are often overused, as when the Left compare Bush to Hitler, but, sometimes in a historical context can be an appropriate comparison, such as comparing Saddam Hussein to Hitler.
I am not aware of the context of the discussion. However, I suspect whomever called you a Nazi was not aware of your religion when he made the comment, and with that in mind, you being a Jew is irrelevent, and I will have to go back and check out the context. I will do so later when I get home.
It was probably inappropriate.

Matt,
Don has posted entire sections from other sites as his own. He spouts the vilest of hate. He does not care about facts, and keeps repeating the same inane posts over and over almost like a chant. He pretty much just has an irrational hatred for the President and conservatives in general. He accused me of bestiality (which came back to bite him because I can be way grosser than he is).
I pointed out that the Nazi’s lived on hate - and so did he, and it was unhealthy. I didn’t so much call him a nazi (at first) as point out the similarity in modus operandi between him and nazi’s. Inappropriate? His religion is irrelevant. His actions are what matter.
September 7th, 2005 at 3:26 pm
Hear is the post the weasel is so mad about…
“Please, for your own sake sit back and read the hatred in your posts. Hatred is bad Don, it eats away at you inside. This is not the first Cat 5 Hurricane. And New Orleans has long feared such a storm. The Nazi’s lived on hate Don. I really don’t understand what liberals stand for. All I hear is what you stand against. No ideas. Only hate. No facts. Only hate.
It is getting old.”
PS. I believe that Don is actually the infamous Mike - here only to jam legitimate discussion.

ya know i did say i wasnt going to post anymore, but as i check back here and there. i find it so FREAKIN ironic that no one on the right has anything to say unless they are bashing the people “QUOTE” that are “LEFT”.
so i guess buy lieing and saying i wasnt going to post anymore, hell must mean i would make a great republican, so not much positive things to say about bush i take it.

This will be interesting if it turns out to be true….
“The Red Cross Blocked
The Fox News Channel’s Major Garrett was just on my show extending the story he had just reported on Brit Hume’s show: The Red Cross is confirming to Garrett that it had prepositioned water, food, blankets and hygiene products for delivery to the Superdome and the Convention Center in the immediate aftermath of the hurricane, but were blocked from delivering those supplies by orders of the Louisiana state government, which did not want to attract people to the Superdome and/or Convention Center. Garrett has no paper trail yet, but will follow up on his verbal confirmation from sources at the highest levels of the Red Cross.”

I am JOINING liberal posters and politicians calling for a full investigation of disaster relief in New Orleans and the rest of Louisiana. In fact - I believe that after the crap spewed by these people we MUST now have such an investigation.
September 7th, 2005 at 11:00 pm
Can you even read Weasel? I was posting the quote you are so upste about for easy reference. Otherwise, poor Matt was going to have to search for it. Jammer.

i thought the people on the right have so much back bone. i guess not real happy with your man BUSH. i dont blame you.

I agree with the politicians calling for a full investigation of the problems with the rescue and disaster relief efforts in Louisiana. I don’t want to jump to any conclusions without all the facts.
Now, it’s being reported the Louisiana National Guard has been ordered to not discuss the timeline for preparation and deployment. If that is true, it sounds bad to me. I want to know the truth! Is everyone with me on that? The truth! Good or bad, let the chips fall where they may. Let’s really look into what happened.
I want to know about FEMA. Why weren’t they rolling into the area while winds were still strong, the roads were still blocked, the bridges were out, and there was no electricity or communications? I want to know who had the power to order what. I want to know why the plans that DID exist were not used. I want to know about the money diverted from rebuilding levees into local “projects”. I want to know why evacuations weren’t ordered. I want to know why help was refused and supplies blocked. I want to know the truth about ALL of it.
And – to the point of this comment string, I want to make damn sure that someone is keeping track of the money. What did “Deep Throat” say? “Follow the money.” Debit cards for evacuees actually will leave a paper trail for each purchase. They are way better than cash this. So, so long as good records are maintained on who gets them – I’m for them.
I also hope that people sit back and take stock of this disaster in another sense. It is frightening how quickly and how totally a major United States metropolis can be totally destroyed. It is frightening how people were forced to loot for food. And it frightening that some bad elements went on looting sprees of a different nature. I hope that all Americans learn to keep emergency kits at the ready for each family member. Even if poor – it doesn’t take that much money to put a bag aside with water, food like pop-tars or something, and some other bare essentials.
September 8th, 2005 at 12:05 am
ya know guys you should really read this good, not just scan over it and right away bash the comments.
what has happen down south takes us to another level, forget about blame and whos fault it is. these actions in my mind deserve to have him impeached. its amazing that the people on the right want to blame the locals, they want to blame the dems. they want to blame everyone but the man they should. and if bush wants to stand up infornt of america and say his hands were tied, he was counting on the locals. if he himself cant and wont step in when all he had to do was turn on the FREAKIN tv or pic up a paper. if he wants to stand there and in a nut shell tell us he didnt have any power to get things done cause of red tape. then we as a country need to wonder what kind of leader his is. his job it to protect his citizens from harm. for that is the govt. job. and he in the end fail at that.
if we can send a ship all the way across the world and save some stranded russians, and we cant even drive some trucks into N.O. is just a shame from every stance. there is no way that anyone with a mind can explain that away. for 5, 5 freakin days no help arrived. while our good people down south were left to die. blame all you want, but it was bush’s responsibilty in the end to step in.
if the people on the right are going to say that 48 to 96 hours is just the right amount of time to respond to a crisis. i could see if it came out of the blue like an attack. but to have days before it even hit land fall. what is going to happen to america when we have no warning.
he had days, before it hit, and even that 5 days after the tragady hit N.O. for bush your president, to fall short on his job is just shamefull. and you can do all you want to explain it away, it was the mayor, the sen. the buses and so forth. but in the end he failed this country.
and i dont get why everyone wants to give him a pass. i thought he had the power to get things done. he could of done “”"HE”" HE HE could of got things going. and he didnt.
that is the shameful part. and for you to stick by a man that has brought great shame to the USA. i just dont get it. and i guess i will never get it.
so please wake up people and stop living in the same LA LA land that bush does.
don
September 8th, 2005 at 12:21 am
You want to “forget about blame and whos fault it is” Weasel? Then you convict Bush of crimes significant enough for impeachment? OK.
I’ll listen to your argument. The president should be impeached for not usurping power from the legally elected governments of the City of New Orleans and the State of Louisiana. Never mind that you are saying he is guilty for not pushing incompetent Democrats out of the way. We’ll ignore Democrat incompetence - never address it. yah, yah. OK. I’m with you, yah. Wait - crap. Just read the Constitution. I think that THAT would get him impeached. Crap, crap, crap. Oh well. Lets think of something else.
Why would you possibly argue against finding out the truth, the whole truth? Is anyone here arguing that it would be bad to know the whole truth?
September 8th, 2005 at 12:40 am
and they worst part of the whole picture. how the international world views him. how can a man, no matter whos fault it is, how can he goto other nations and say im here to spread peace. in less than a week he single handly damaged the worlds view on america.
can you honestly say that he can go over to other countries and speak of leadership.
blame aside. HE IS THE PRESIDENT OF THE USA. in the end its his job. in that case why do we have a federal govt. kinda reminds me of the england with the monarcy. no power to do crap but all they are just a show piece. he is the president, and in that sense he needed to step in, no matter how much the locals are losers, and ill admit again they should all be hung on the local level. but he is the president. it HIS job to step in when he sees the failure. and to say he couldnt have forseen, or had no idea. talk about a 5 day tape delay. he was just to hung up in playing in a band, and eating cake, and cheney was to busy buying a 2.9 million dollar house, and condi really enjoys her plays.
in the end he failed this country. like i said before hes the PRESIDENT of this country. i just dont get it guys. i know you love the man with all your heart, and you believe in him with all the soul in your body. but to know that to much destruction was happening to N.O. and not do anything. comon guys.
its a double edge sword, if he says he had no idea what was happening. when the rest of the solar system knew the misery and death and so much destruction makes him even more unfit to lead. or does he say. “well i knew but was going to take a back seat and see if the locals can handle it” i mean guys wake up.
i guess his end all excuse will be he didnt want to believe the paper and the tv, cause you know the last time he was givin info, it was wrong. so he cant listen to the intel. cause the last time he got the wrong info we invaded IRAQ.
i want to so hard to look and see your views on the whole subject. but enough is enough. HES THE PRESIDENT and that was his job. and so many died cause of his mistake.

Why would anyone without something to hide be against an investigation into all aspects of this tragedy? I think that as Americans - we owe it to the Union to look into all aspects and to correct mistakes before they happen again. Liberals and conservatives spewing blame are both wrong. We need to know what the laws were? Who had what assets? Where they were located? And who had authority to act?
Now, I don’t think that the states will ratify a constitutional amendment allowing the President to usurp their authority. But hey, I could be wrong. Maybe the President does require that power. He can do it in times of war or rebellion - maybe natural disaster should be included. It would be easy to write an amendment allowing that, I guess. The current authority is pretty strong – allowing suspension of habeas corpus in times of war or rebellion. Abraham Lincoln did it during the Civil War.
“A writ of habeas corpus is a judicial mandate to a prison official ordering that an inmate be brought to the court so it can be determined whether or not that person is imprisoned lawfully and whether or not he should be released from custody.” http://www.lectlaw.com/def/h001.htm
Would the liberal and progressive readers be OK with George Bush having that power right now in one, maybe two or three states? Would the conservatives be OK with John Kerry or a Democrat having that power?
September 8th, 2005 at 12:47 am
Weasel, Have you taken U.S. Government yet? I mean, not to be insulting or anything - but you across as pretty ignorant.

you talk about not over stepping in power, but comon a cat 5 storm was heading right for the worst part of the country. thats just a copeout. oh he didnt want to but in.
so i guess the whole country would of pressed charges against him for over stepping in power. i could just see the headline.
“bush convicted of crimes against humanity” for he stuck his nose into things that he shouldnt. were not talking about a tornado guys. were talking about a freakin CAT 5 storm.
its funny that is what rove is pushing, its the job from the bottom up.
i dont think this country or the world would of givin to rats asses that bush stepped in and was the hero and saved the the south from loser local govt.

Holy Crap! I just read that declaring this power because of a problem in one state would give the President the power to suspend habeas corpus in ALL states.! He could lock people up without trial and with no recourse! Man - Is that what liberals want? Cool. I underestimated you.
Weasel - that is NOT how it works. Ya know Weas, books are not kryptonite. You could actually search over to a copy of the Constitution on-line and read what the powers of the President actually are - if you cared.
I mean hell - I agree with you! Lets find out what the whole truth is!!!! You were calling for that yesterday weren’t you? If Bush was wrong and he had the power as you say – then lets impeach him! If not, then not.
Can you do me a favor? maybe post the part of the Constitution I missed? What article and clause gives him that authority? I mean hell - that could be part of the investigation.

matt this should intrest you very much, for i see a political future for you. i know that is what you want to do. so back and keep bush all you want. but this latest screw up is not going to blow over. no matter how much rove works his magic.

But article One, Section 9, Clause 2 covers his powers to suspend habeas corpus. Actually - the constituion seems to be structured in such a way as to prevent the Federal government from seizing control from the States. If the President has that power - I can’t find it.

FYI - A CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll taken September 5-6 shows:
13% said George W. Bush is “most responsible for the problems in New Orleans after the hurricane”
18% said “federal agencies”
25% said “state and local officials”
38% said “no one is to blame”
6% had no opinion.
29% said that “top officials in the federal agencies responsible for handling emergencies should be fired”
63% said they should not
8% had no opinion.
So - who is dragging who’s party down Weasel?

Now we see the Democrats running away from a bipartisan investigation in Katrina. I told you all this would happen. Republicans want the investigation and Democrats don’t. Now honestly, what does that tell you?
September 8th, 2005 at 7:11 pm
it is just a joke, ya a investigation stacked with people scared shitless of rove. oh ya you forgot to mention the one million plus dollars that FEMA is getting to it can investigate itself. what a joke.
ever hear the saying about letting the fox watch the hen house, love the article the USA has, hes a little tib bit…
Over the past four years, the Bush administration has replaced competent leaders with people long on political connections but short on disaster management expertise. At the same time, the war on terrorism has drained the agency’s resources and reduced its effectiveness.
Katrina would have been devastating regardless, but those actions turned FEMA into something akin to New Orleans’ famous levees — a structure sure to fail when a big disaster struck.
you know what a freakin joke, and heres another point well taken…
As leader when your Government fails, you have a few options:
1) Resign yourself
2) Clean house and start over
3) Play Queen and just keep looking at the Potemkin villages and smirk.
Maybe Bush should take a hint from Ukraine. If it’s broke, clean house or end up like your predecessor… From the Telegraph (UK):
Viktor Yushchenko, the Ukrainian president, has dismissed his Cabinet for failing to show “team spirit”.
Yulia Tymoshenko’s government has been dissolved
Concern is growing about the stability of the regime which took control in the peaceful Orange Revolution last November in the face of opposition from Moscow.
The same allegations of corruption which plagued Leonid Kuchma’s government are now being levelled at his successor Mr Yushchenko’s regime.
Some day I hope MY country has a Government that sees the error of its ways and tries to correct it, instead of diminishing the public’s faith to a point where incompetence is tolerated and accepted.
but i guess bush picked #3.
you guys are to much. you might want to tell the people on the right that are slowly abondoning bush, how much they SUCK. or are they the ones that have the balls to stand up to ROVE.

“Political Issues Snarled Plans for Troop Aid
By ERIC LIPTON, ERIC SCHMITT and THOM SHANKER
Published: September 9, 2005″
Interesting story at the New York Times. Hardly a Bush-loving organization. You can get it through Drudge.
Turns out I nailed the legal issues with seizing control as some left wing wackos have suggested. That’s what a GPA of 3.96 will get you.
And again….. who is trying to supress the CONGRESSIOINAL investigation? Nope, rant and rant if you must. Now I am calling for a full investigation into ALL aspects of this disaster. We can discuss t6he structure - sure. FEMA and the state reports should be taken with a grain of salt. There should be a Congressional Investigation. If there is fault - lets hear the specifics. Only someone afraid of the truth would argue against that. But, weasels hate light don’t they?
Here is an idea. If Bush was wrong because we knew that there could be huge storm that hit the south someday…shouldn’t we FORCE everyone living on or west of the San Andreas fault to abandon their property and move east? Isn’t it criminal to allow these people to choose to put themselves and others in danger? We all know that the “big one” will hit someday. San Francisco should be abandoned right now. Nancy Pelosi - you must save your people!
I’ll be sure to remind you I said this if the big one hits.
September 9th, 2005 at 12:14 am
Weasel. An off topic post to address an interesting issue you raised. And, a friendly piece of advice.
The Liberals are the ones against private gun ownership. And, because liberals hate “the war”, they have left the military and refuse to sign up anew. That means, as I’ve pointed out that the military is becoming more white, more conservative, and coincidently more christian every day.
Be careful wishing for a revolution until you figure out whose got the guns.
September 11th, 2005 at 2:17 pm
Well, as the hysteria dies down it is turning out that plenty went wrong and plenty went right. The initial reponse was poor. The plans counted on the local authorities being in place, in communication, and competent. Sadly - it was not so. But equally as bad was the number of FEMA people without a clue and the poor coordination between the locals, the feds, and the third party releif agencies.
What to learn? I stand by my statements that there should be a complete and thorough investigation. I reject calls for an indpendent commision - because dammit that is what the Congress is supposed to be for. If Congress can’t do a job like this - if they admit that the level of hatred is too high…then they should ALL resign and let us put people in place who can do the nations work. I say that to both parties.
I am sorry to see the poverty pimps like Sharpton and Jackson decending on the now displaced black population. They spread a message of hate and despair. I’d lob=ve to see someone like Bill Cosby come forward in the black community and reverse the dependency culture. An example - in the New Orleans area there was a growing number of Latin American immegrants. Just like everywhere else they are day laborers, construction workers, and will do just about anything. But - they are NOT dependent on the state. Sadly, it appears that the blacks are about to be surpassed by yet another ethnic group. This COULD be a chance to reverse that - time will tell.
And - I have one idea of a practical nature to do with communications. I suggest that there be emergency communications put in place in every city. Rather than relying on satalites, I suggest baloons. With towers out, and power scarce a baloon could carry an antenna pretty high giving it good coverage. A small mobile generator for each - and a disasternet couild be deployed fairly quickly. Just an idea.
September 12th, 2005 at 9:43 am
The saddest part is that the mayor and governor will both get re-elected
September 14th, 2005 at 3:41 pm
Gym - Good point. Look at all the Democratic Utopias.
Boston - home of the big ditch, and where in the 70’s violence against integration was as bad as anyplace in the South. I believe that people there are the rudest in the country - worse even than New York.
New York City - where thank God a Republican was in charge during crunch time.
Washington DC - where they re-elected a mayor AFTER he was busted for smoking crack, and where though they spend more money per student than ANY school district in the nation the schools are falling apart and are cesspools of violence and ignorance.
Atlanta, where a black killer killed dozens of young black men in the 70’s - and the local authorities spent most of their time searching for someone wearing white sheets.
New Orleans – where we’ve seen how well Democrat control in the City and the State worked .
Dallas, where blacks waiting for a bus downtown one time once cheered a demented homeless person on as he shot a young white Police officer to death.
Detroit, Memphis, L.A., San Francisco….. The list goes on. Look where the Democrats HAVE held power for years, even decades. They should be the most prosperous places on the planet. But instead they are poverty farms. Places where the motivated can make a living (and move to the suburbs), but many many just exist in sub-standard housing or projects with little or no hope. They have been there through Republican and Democrats in the White House. But always they vote for Democrats. Democrats RELY on these people to stay poor and angry. Otherwise, they might start thinking about what a crappy job they’ve done all these years.
September 14th, 2005 at 4:18 pm
Why did God send a hurricane into New Orleans, a mostly democratic city?
September 14th, 2005 at 6:18 pm
I was just reviewing some old notes and came across one about San Francisco not allowing Marines to do some simulated urban warfare exercises there a while back. The Marines found more patriotic areas to do them. You know that San Francisco just HATES the military. They also just rejected parking a Battleship at Fishermans warf for tourists - pretty much for that reason.
I wonder how fast that tune would change when the “Big One” hits?
“Hey You baby-killer asshole - dig me out from this rubble you jerk! Then get out of here!” I suppose they’d pull a move like New Orleans - blame everyone else, not do a thing themselves, and then rather than thank anyone - burn em with blame and insults. What would the faculty at Berkley do if the Guard rolled in? Welcome them - or spit on them?

Now Kahn… People in San Francisco don’t hate ALL of the military… they are rather fond of the Navy.
