Google News, Google Schnews..
By Matt Margolis | May 2, 2005
I have to say lately I’ve had problems with Googe News…
It used to be a great way to find stories from local or MSM sources… but now it seems like i can’t search Google News without getting a result back from some obscure blog. I thought it was great that Google News decided to include blogs, but it seems they don’t have great selection standards. Blogs For Bush was denied for the most bizarre reasons, but other blogs, similar in virtually all ways except they aren’t branded with our President’s name, have been accepted.
Nevertheless, they’ve let certain blogs in, kept certain blogs out, and it seems that I’m getting Google E-mail Alerts because blogs are more likely to use terms I’ve created Google Alerts for than actual media sources.
Google News needs to establish standards for accepting blogs and they have to stick to them….

Not to play the devil’s advocate, but since it’s Google’s News Source .. they can do what they want.
However it is extremely unfair what they are doing. I really don’t get how they decide who to let in and who not.

I’m not saying they can’t do what they want.. i’m just saying they’re making bad choices.

Google people overwhelmingly are Democrat and supported Kerry. I’ve virtually stopped using google.

Yeah that’s realistic, stop using google… until you go to a company website, use their search engine and realize its Google Technology.
I don’t like Fox News at all, but it doesn’t mean I’m going to boycott the World Series on Fox, no matter how much I hate Tim McCarver.

I use alta vista, singing fish, all-the-web, lycos, and dogpile. They all seem to work fine and I don’t think any of the use google “technology”. I could be wrong - but I don’t think so.
Voting with dollars is how capitalism works. Google people were strongly Democrat and thats where they put their money. So, I don’t use them. Your anaolgy would work if google was the only search engine - but it isn’t.

Kahn, Tech people tend to lean towards the Democrat side. So, chances are all of those sites are supported by people who vote Democrat. So, I’m not sure what you’re accomplishing.
Also, it doesn’t make sense to have such hatred for people just because of their political preference. It’s one thing to disagree with some Democratic views, but to hate Democrats, just because they’re Democrats is a little ridiculous.

The real way to “boycott” Google is to no visit their advertisers…

“Kahn, Tech people tend to lean towards the Democrat side”
Now that’s a very interesting statement. Conservatives lack the vision to make new stuff ? They are only able to take advantage of what liberals produce ? Why is it that teachers and techies tend towards the Democratic side ? Could Conservatives “learn” something about themselves here ? Hmmmmm……. Oh, I got it, without a Bill Gates to lead them all, the worker bee techies would never get it together, which is why open source is failing so badly….
cheers,

Keachie, You should complete your thought before posting, ’cause you didn’t make much sense.
First of all, I said that tech people tend to lean Democrat. That has nothing to do with creating new things. And I said nothing about Conservatives. It sounds to me like you want to have a debate, so you’re pretending to have heard something, so you’re flying off the handle is justifed!

qt - Bull - California and west coast tech people tend to be Democrat. And FYI - once the search engine was created, the rest of “the google story” is marketing.
Guns, cars, compters, disk drives, refrigerators, and bridges are technolgy. I vote with dollars. Or lack of dollars.
matt- I’d have to visit google to know who their advertisers are. I don’t. And honstly, I don’t need it. Alta Vista and dogpile serve most of my needs.

qt- choosing to not support google because they give their profits to the Democrats is not an idication of hatred. I think it is a logical and legal way for me to show my displeasure witheir political beliefs and to withold my suppirt. It is typically the Democrats who deal in hate politics and racial division.

Let’s see if I missed something here. On one side of the spectrum sit the left and Democrats. On the other side of the spectrum sit Republicans and conservatives. This is of course broadly speaking, but then, third parties just really haven’t made it in this country yet. If you are pushing for conservative leftys, then I am in error. But then, your terms are not in common usage, so you get some blame too.
can’t we all just get along ?

“First of all, I said that tech people tend to lean Democrat. That has nothing to do with creating new things.”
I see, Google technology is back in that pile described by the famous supposed quote by the Patent office exec to the effect, in 1899, that everything that’s going to be invented has been already.
Techie stuff is new stuff, or you don’t get any venture capital. “Bad cop, no innovation, no donut.”

Keachie, Try not to mix the crystal meth and the ecstasy before making entries - they are a little incoherent.
I get along just fine without Google. They are a company populated by very liberal people. As a rule, liberals want my money and to limit certain rights I find important. So, I choose to avoid supporting them financially when I can. I would also avoid Microsoft, if the alternative wasn’t Apple.
Your statement about tekkies leaning left is just wrong. That was my point. Left coast centric tech companies may lean left - but that may be a reflection of geographic group think. There are many many tech industries and companies that are not left centric. You made a wild unsubstantiated statement that you can’t back up. That is the point.

I agree- I have google alerts to try to follow state politics in Ohio, and I get tons of crap from blogs and fringe websites. Google needs to clean that up.

Well here is a story I just happened to catch last night when it happened. Oops - it’s not on google.

“It is typically the Democrats who deal in hate politics and racial division.”
The same can be said for Republicans.
Since the culture that was created during the internet boom mostly consisted of younger people WORLDWIDE, it’s not crazy to assume that most techies are more liberal than conservative, especially since most of the startups originated in the Bay Area and other more democratic areas like Boston and New York.
Now that all depends on who you consider techies. Does the 55 year old engineer at the Raytheon Kentucky office who’s been doing mainframe cobol programming for the last 15 years count? Not really.
Google is a great company that houses some of the world’s best software engineers. If google didn’t pony up and offer 1gb email, your hotmail account would still be sitting at 2mb.

I’m far from being in the top of Google searches, but I’m on one week and off the next. Go figure

Jeff,
I have to disagree. All I ever hear from the Democrats is character assasination and derogatory remarks. What are the DEMOCRAT plans for:
Social Security (OK, one guy has ponied up a plan)
Medicare
Defence
or - anything?
And why should the minority have the same power as the majority? I constantly see anti-reublican remarks and bumber stickers, and more.
Good - keep taunting the guys with the guns.
