GodBlogCon

By Matt Margolis | March 1, 2005

There’s growing chatter in the blogosphere about an upcoming GodBlogCon.

While I’m sure the intent is not to be a congregation of conservative bloggers, I would guess they’ll represent a large portion of the attendees. SmartChristian Blog refers to it “The first ever Christian Blogosphere Convention”

So why isn’t it called ChristianBloggerCon or ChristBlogCon or some variation thereof? As a conservative Jewish blogger, I find it troubling that conservatives have trademarked “God” as Christian.

It’s not that I’m offended, I just feel that if it’s going to be called “GodBlogCon” any blogger who believes in a higher power and who blogs about their faith—whatever it is—should not feel as if they would be excluded because they are not Christian.

UPDATE: Political Teen has a video of Jeff Jarvis plugging GodBlogCon on MSNBC

… and note to Jarvis… enough with the “pajamas” cliche…

Who Owns God in Politics and the Blogosphere?
I’m no fan of souless Political Correctness and I am not in any way hostile to religion in public life. But I have some quiet discomfort at the way in which evangelical Christian identity and conservative political identity are equated a bit too easi…

If it were more universally applied to religion that be one thing. I have no problem with Bush expressing his faith, I just feel that at times the conservative community as whole forgets that people of many faiths make up the Republican Party.

Speaking as an evangelical Christian blogger, I think you’re right, Matt. I don’t think “GodBlogCon” was adopted as a name to be arrogant or territorial, but if organizers want to continue using that name, they should make it more inclusive. If they intend to restrict the conference to only Christian bloggers — or even more narrowly to evangelical Christian bloggers (which seems to be their intention) — then the name should probably reflect that (e.g. ChristianBlogCon or EvangelicalBlogCon).

Still, you’re fighting an uphill battle, as it seems conservative Christian bloggers have co-opted the term “Godblog”/”Godbloggers” (or, more accurately, been labeled by the media as such) so wrestling it from their hands could be a good fight.

Thanks for sharing your perspective on this!

    Matt,

From one Jewish Matt to another; they don’t want you. Well, they want to convert you, that is for sure, but until you accept Christ as your Lord and Savior (two things you can’t do if you want to remain a member of the tribe) you will always be “the other” no matter how much you agree with them. And once the Reconstructionists get ahold of this country (G-d help us), and Rushdoony’s version of the Constitution and the Bible are in force, you, and I, and anyone else who disagrees will be swept aside.

There is only one chosen people, and that is the Jews…

hey, just because 90% of the world of Christian or derivations thereof, doesn’t mean they are right…

would it be uncalled for if I shouted “Jew Power!” ???

We live in the most free country on earth. To think that it is in spite of Christians instead of because of them strikes me as rather absurd. You have to disregard looking at all other countries and thier makeup to come to one of those conclusions.
