With The Lights Out
By Matt Margolis | November 30, 2004
Today, I finally received Nirvana’s new box set “With The Lights Out” which I pre-ordered a few days before it’s official release. Years ago, I was a pretty big Nirvana fan, to the point where I was involved in trading shows on cassette tapes (before the rise of MP3s) and actually obtaining some pretty rare material.
I was pretty excited about getting the box set, despite the fact that by 1998, I had obtained virtually all the rare and unreleased material that appears on the new set. This box set is years overdue. Certainly while former and current hardcore Nirvana fans will buy it anyway, one of the main reasons box sets like these get released is to curb bootlegging. So much for that.
Still, while I’ve largely outgrown my active interest in Nirvana, I do nevertheless have an interest in the rare material (which, even for the rare stuff that I’ve had for as long as 10 years) I haven’t listened to in a long time. However, I’m sure many people will be disappointed in the sound quality of many of the tracks, perhaps only the hardcore fans and bootleggers can really appreciate the material for what it really is.

Matt - Nirvana? Hate to show my age, but I’ve had a decades long obsession with Pink Floyd. Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here are the top albums on my list. And, there are many many recordings ranging from awful to good. Nirvana? Shheeeeezzzzz

I still like Nirvana… but yeah they do not live up to their mythic status, their just ok. I’m more into the noise rock that preceded them like Sonic Youth and the Pixies. I’m surprised you like Pink Floyd Kahn, and thats one more thing we don’t have in common.
