Recounting To Illegitimacy
By Matt Margolis | November 29, 2004
According to the North County News, the Kerry-Edwards campaign’s involvement in the recount of vote in Ohio is increasing. The Kerry-Edwards campaign website even posted this note, asking for supporters to contribute to the campaigns General Election Legal and Accounting Compliance Fund:
The Federal Election Commission has just granted our request to raise funds now to cover recount expenses. Your contribution to Kerry-Edwards 2004 GELAC will provide the resources to make sure we are prepared to win the post election day battles.
The most interesting thing about this is the fact that for four years virtually everyone on the left and the Democratic Party used the circumstances of Bush’s victory in 2000 (his winning the electoral college vote, not the national popular vote) to label him an illegitimate President.
Today, the Democrats have focused all their energies and conspiracy theories to hold out hope that Bush’s victory in Ohio, much larger than his victory in Florida back in 2000, can be overturned. However, based on the number of votes at play, this could only give Kerry enough votes in the Electoral College to claim victory, but not the national popular vote. This would give Kerry an illegitimate victory by the standards they set for Bush four years ago.
Recount after recount after recount four years ago could not change the results in Florida. Do the Democrats and the Kerry-Edwards campaign really believe that the results of Ohio could be changed? My guess is probably not. Kerry supporters and Bush-haters on the other hand probably do to some degree.
Liberal bloggers certainly welcome the idea of the recounts, even with the zero-chance that the results of Ohio could be overturned. Why are the same people who were advocating abolishing the Electoral College now hoping to achieve a victory by the same means?
What could their justification be? Payback? A self-gratifying “Gotchya” moment? Would overturning Ohio suddenly mean Kerry has a mandate too?
Let’s stop pretending this has anything to do with “letting every vote count.” They want to challenge every rule and every ballot, and claim irregularities and injustice gave Ohio to Bush. Any sane person knows that the results are not going to change. Is this really about votes, or public opinion? If it’s about votes, then they are fighting a lost cause for a victory that they considered illegitimate not too long ago. If it is for public opinion, then they are only achieving further polarization of America, thus, the “divided America” they blamed on Bush would ultimately be the baby they raised and nurtured.

Kahn Read the last paragraph-you always make me laugh. Got you again! Rememeber don’t believe everything you read.:)
Dear Kahn,
I am a unversity professor down here in the good ol’ University of Texas. I originally served as an officer in the Marine’s during the Gulf War under Bush Senior. I’ve read your past “blog” comments. And I wanted to let you know something- I.Q. testing only measures a persons potential. Whether or not they achieve that potential or attempt to achieve that potential is up to the individual and his or her circumstances. Please do not embarrass us Marines by spilling out facts or repeating sound bites to which you are ill-informed. You are a shame. Please try using spell-check or a dictionary. Or take “mike again” up on his offer to get you typing lessons. For all our sakes.

Sherry - Since your post was so general and demeaning, well - fuck you. I can’t type - I admit it. I don’t repeat “sound bites”. I come to my own conclusions after careful consideration. Now since I have not seen you post here before and I have seen many outrageous things said – forgive me if I doubt your veracity.
Yes - I.Q. only tests potential, as do many tests. But looking at the record, you must admit that G. W. Bush has done well? Yes? I mean he graduated Yale. Got an MBA from Harvard. Flew fighters. Was your governor twice. And IS president. All in all that’s not bad if you look at it objectively. The two most intelligent presidents last century were both Republicans (Hoover and Nixon). Basically, I’m sick of fighting this fight over and over. George Bush won. Most of the country wanted him to be president.
I know people that know the president. And, I met John Kerry myself when he was active in VVAW. I know why I voted the way I did. John Kerry is one of the most liberal members of congress. Instead of embracing his past – he ran from it. Instead, he chose to run on…what? Viet Nam? Criticizing every decision and statement made by the president? It was weak. Do I like everything that the Republicans ran on? No. I think that the idea of amending the Constitution to ban gay marriage is stupid. In fact, I don’t like seeing ANY restrictions added to the Constitution. Do I think that we should have sent more troops to Iraq at the beginning? Yes. I think that the military establishment was caught up in the ideas espoused in Network Centric Warfare (Alberts, Garstka, & Stein) and in Effects Based Operations (Smith) where the concepts of shock and awe were first described. I think it was a mistake to think that we were at war with Sadaam Husein and not the nation of Iraq. I think that the “surgical” type attack we launched left us open to the crap they are facing over there now. And, that we should have smashed them. Do I think that the Democrats would have done that? No.
Now here is something you will not see in a sound bite. I think that the country is terribly divided. I think that the gridlock and hatred started when the Democrats lost control of the House and it has gotten worse ever since. I think that the Democratic Party does not know how to be the loyal minority. I would use your own congress in Texas as a perfect example of this. And, I think that it is time to have a Constitutional Convention. Look at the Red/Blue map and think about that. Each state gets ONE vote. Should we have two houses of congress? Should we have a president? How much power should a supreme court have? Do we still need to have the Electoral College? Lets really step up and change things!

Oh and Sherry - Marine’s - a point off for puntuation. We were Marines. Not Marine’s. Of course, I doubt you were. But I could be wrong. Maybe you should buy that dictionary you mentioned.

Well Sherry - was I right to assume you were not in the Marines - because you couldn’t spell Marines? ( And you did that in a post where you told me to get a dictionary.)
Of course, maybe the Corps changed a lot after my time. My time was M16A1’s and 1911A1’s. But I guess your time was just watching war movies on TV?
