Those Other Stem Cells

By Matt Margolis | November 28, 2004

Looks like Kerry and Company were fighting the wrong battle

A South Korean woman paralyzed for 20 years is walking again after scientists say they repaired her damaged spine using stem cells derived from umbilical cord blood.

Hwang Mi-Soon, 37, had been bedridden since damaging her back in an accident two decades ago.

Last week her eyes glistened with tears as she walked again with the help of a walking frame at a press conference where South Korea researchers went public for the first time with the results of their stem-cell therapy.

These weren’t embryonic stem cells, these were umbilical cord stem cells.

We’ll have to wait and see how this story pans out.

You are absolutely correct. And that case is just the tip of the iceberg. Adult stem cells and umbilical-cord stem cells are helping actual human patients in the fight against 58 different diseases and ailments, including Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis and several types of cancer. Those supposedly “promising” embryonic stem cells, in contrast, have NEVER HELPED A SINGLE PERSON. Please see http://www.stemcellresearch.org for the great news on ADULT stem cells that few in the mainstream media seem to want to discuss.

Brian it is a flat out lie that there are 58 ADULT stem cell treatments.

I thought it was 50 in the other thread? Which one is it.

The SCIENTIFIC and MEDICAL communities support and believe embryonic stem cell research have great promise. Aren’t they the ones who are the PROFESSIONALS?

Also Brian, it is quite clear you have little to no scientific training! Your a great source of science!

    Joe K.:

Unfortunately for you, I am well-acquainted with the mendacious people at Missouri Cures. They’re misrepresenting http://www.stemcellresearch.org. Do No Harm never said that they’ve CURED those conditions — i.e. eradicated them from the face of the earth — only that they’ve successfully TREATED people with adult stem cells, which is true. It’s really very dishonest to “refute” claims (about “cures” and “FDA approval”) that have NEVER ACTUALLY BEEN MADE. I’m about to expose MissouriCures for the fraud that it is. Thanks for your help.

    P.S. — It’s now 72.

Being a paid shill and being there to correct mountains of misinformation and outright lies are not the same thing. It would be great if I could correct nimrods such as yourself AND get paid for it. As it stands now, this is all pro bono work.
