The Democrats’ New Hope?

By Matt Margolis | November 16, 2004

What’s next for the Democratic party? Who is going to step up to the plate in 2008? The Washington Post reports that Democratic Underground visitors think Virginia Governor Mark R. Warner could be their party’s next presidential candidate.

Three years ago, Warner persuaded voters in an overwhelmingly red state to put him in office with a NASCAR-loving, pro-death penalty, pro-gun rights, fiscally conservative campaign. Since then, he has backed some restrictions on abortion, signed more than a dozen gun rights bills, balanced the state’s books and persuaded a Republican legislature to help him pass a $1.5 billion tax increase.

Placing strategy over policy, the belief is that nominating Warner would be “providing the party a presidential candidate who could appeal to the conservative, heartland voters who helped reelect President Bush.”

Even Joe Trippi, Howard Dean’s former campaign manager said that Warner has been able to relate to rural voters – something Democrats have had trouble with.

The only problem is, he’d have to survive the primaries first… and let’s face it, no Democrat would make it through the Democrat primaries campaigning as a centrist.

The potential candidacy of Warner would fit will with the forthcoming makeover of Democratic Party – but it seems like the Democrats think they make themselves over by looking increasingly similar to Republicans.

So, is the key to Democrats’ hopes a donkey in elephant’s clothing?

Don’t count on it. Republicans make better Republicans any day. When it comes down to it, the Democratic Party will nominate a liberal.

    Matt,
Governor Mark Warner (D-VA) should be a lesson for Democrats. When he ran, the NRA pointed out his Republican oponenets anti-gun history and Warners pro-gun stands. The laws he passed took effect this summer. Many many usually Republican, but staunch NRA friends of mine voted for him.

I think MY ideal candidate would be
Pro-life, on the grounds that the right to live outweigh the right of a pregnant woman to be inconvenienced. But, with allowances for the health and welfare of the mother.
Pro -ALL the bill of rights. This includes guns and speech - both commonly trampled on.
Strong on defense and willing to do what it takes no matter what France thinks.
Willing to shrink government, but finding a realistic and workable balance (hard to define, I know).

Mike again - read your own posts to see why I respond to you aggresively. Your Manifestos are a little bit long, wrong, and full of vile. The fact you can’t see that is indicative of the problem with you - and with most liberals. We won - deal with it. Continuuing this argument like the issue has not been decided is pointless.

Someinformation…How do you know if I am telling the truth or really writing what I think or feel now or in the past . I am just letting you know I manipulated you and anyone who cared to join this excercise into an argument..it was very easy to do. I did not pick on you specifically but you took the bait. Lesson1 for you-Its the internet-you can be anyone you want.Your opinion of me is of no consequence think what you want I’m fine with that-truly. Lesson 2: As I am sure you heard before do not believe everything you read. Think don’t just react. Investigate for yourself if what is being said is truthful or honest. Question everything. I do not consider you foolish just still somewhat gullible. Its understandable. I’m sure you stand by every word you write and think others do the same. Who’s to say they do? Who’s to say you do but you? Perhaps it should be asked “what is ones motivation for writing anything”- But remember if you think everyone writes and thinks with the same motivation as you I will let you know you are gravely mistaken. Just look at this as a lesson learned on your part. Anyway to end this I am just letting you know it was an excercise and you took the bait. Respond how you wish for I have come here with what I wanted to do. In fact you might see these exchanges posted on another site or newspaper-keep your eyes peeled and thanks for playing

But Mike, I’m Irish. I come to these blogs specifically TO fight. Who manipulated who?

I grew up in the most liberal environment possible. My mother, and all her sistes went to Smith - which is in Northampton where I grew up. My sisters are Smith and Harvard grad, Boston College, and U-mass Amherst. The nuns at my Catholic prep scholl introduced me to a young John Kerry when he was active in the anti-war movement. I have seen and heard the liberal arguments for decades (more than I like to admit) and I reject them. I’ve lived in Germany, Japan, kenya, and in several states. I think the USA is the best run country on the planet, and the best place to live.

But, you go ahead and amuse yourself any way you want. I do.

Oh, and Mike - I graduated college with a 3.96 GPA which translated to Magna Cum Laude. It is a mistake to think that people that reject the liberal agenda and vote Republican are gullible or uneducated. Frankly, that view helps us win as you tend to underestimate us. So thanks - for thinking we are just naive and need to be educated.

But again, you do whatever you want. I’ll take victory no matter what the causes.
