McCain: John Kerry was “Unfair”

By Matt Margolis | September 4, 2004

Looks like John Kerry’s stunt Thursday night did not sit well with John McCain:

John McCain tried Saturday to play peacemaker again. The Republican said Democrat John Kerry was “unfair” when he criticized the GOP ticket as “unfit to lead the nation” and when he suggested that President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney avoided serving in Vietnam.

“John Kerry’s characterization that the president is unfit for duty is unfair,” said McCain, a Republican senator from Arizona. “I categorically reject that just as I categorically reject allegations that Senator Kerry didn’t serve honorably.”

Of course, this time the Kerry campaign is going to ignore McCain’s criticisms and continue their attacks:

Stephanie Cutter, a Kerry spokeswoman, stuck by Kerry’s comments. “We agree with Senator McCain that the debate should not be about what happened 35 years ago, it should be about the state of the country today,” she said. “Because of the way George Bush and Dick Cheney misled this nation into war, they are unfit to lead the country for another four years.”

Not only did John Kerry put words into Cheney’s mouth during his midnight rally, but he once again asserted that his own service in Vietnam somehow makes him qualified to be President.

“The Vice-President called me unfit for office last night,” Mr Kerry told the rally in Springfield, Ohio, with his running mate, John Edwards, beside him. “I’m going to leave it up to the voters to decide whether five deferments [obtained by Mr Cheney over Vietnam] make someone more qualified than two tours of duty.”

Many Democrats were delighted at the counter-offensive, having grown increasingly impatient with Mr Kerry’s passivity in the face of the attacks on his military record, amid the fear that the political initiative was slipping from him. But Republicans claimed that Mr Kerry was playing into their hands, expending time and energy to deal with a peripheral issue.

And that he has. Even though John McCain has said the debate over Vietnam service is “a distraction” from real issues like the war on terror, Kerry is still trying to make this election about the wrong war.

Benedict Arnold was a war hero too.

Dear Kahn: Well said. Except, it is beginning to appear, that unlike Benedict Arnold, John Kerry wasn’t a hero. He’s got a lot of questions to answer. I have read “Unfit For Command”. It’s dynamite.

Dem silence in the blogs. Are you all waiting for you official talking points? Don’t want to talk out of turn? I always suspected that a lot of you were on the DNC payroll. I’ll be interested in seeing what you have to say next. Independently, of course.

    Cannon, Kahn-

This should be the 4th post. There are 5 sections. I have had four unsuccessful attempts at posting since saturday am.

1.See my last post (#13 from back home in new york city thread )

    2. I have provided a detailed description of Kerry’s senate record as you requested. I challenged cannon to provide me with a detailed description of the Bush Tax Plans full implementation up to the year 2010. His response was ideological, providing no supportive facts or links.

    3. I have responded with My first Assertion regarding the Bush Tax Cuts. Have provided numerous sources of supportive evidence. Wondering if anyone would disagree with my First assertion.

    4. I am aware the Bush Tax plan Is not the topic of this particular thread. I am no longer able to post in either the “along came a spider” thread or the NYC thread. I am continuing the unfinished conversation in whatever means available to me. I would also point out that some of you see no connection at all between taxation and support for troops. You call the left unpatriotic, unsupportive of the troops yet holler for lower taxes. So in a way, the topic of taxation fits in neatly with just about any topic.

    5. I Cannot speak for any of the other dems but I only wish I made a cent by doing this. FWIW I have family and friends in Missouri, whom I see mostly over the holidays. Sooner or later the topic of politics rolls around and it gets kind of ugly sometimes. I am here to practice the art of making a point with out getting mad or feeling contempt for another persons point of view. It ain’t easy.

Chicago - good post. Except, you are not following the dem line. Wednesday is Bush dodged the Guard Day. Good play by the media elite, keep it out of the mud.
