Don’t Act All Surprised…

By Matt Margolis | July 19, 2004

I first caught the news from Kevin’s post at Blogs For Bush :

John Kerry’s chief foreign policy adviser, Democratic Committee Platform member and someone seen as short-listed for a Kerry administration secretary of state, Sandy Berger, is being investigated for removing classified documents and keeping them from the 9/11 Commission

Michelle Malkin also has a bunch of links…
UPDATE:

• Michele’s post at A Small Victory was quite entertaining…
• The title of Generation Why’s post says it all, and I agree…
• Backcountry Conservative has a big list of blogs that wrote about this story…

The crux of the issue is found at the END of the article, of course:

The officials said the missing documents were highly classified, and included critical assessments about the Clinton administration’s handling of the millennium terror threats as well as identification of America’s terror vulnerabilities at airports to sea ports.

Clinton, Kerry Advisor Sandy Berger Pilfered Classified Docs?
I saw this first at Blogs of War while I was still blogging on the regional news of a hostage standoff. AP via Newsday: President Clinton’s national security adviser, Sandy Berger, is the focus of a Justice Department investigation after…

How interesting how the Commission comes out and says that Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11 and Bush Supporters continue to insist it did, but one guy who may be a Kerry appointee and has since stepped down hides a few documents which somehow absolves Bush of any responsibility.

I’m pitching the name Hot Pants Scandal. What do you think?

BTW, I’ve got a running report on what the bloggers are saying at my site.

I’ve heard the terms “Pantsgate” And “Socksgate” tossed around already.

But what I (and I’m sure many, many, many others) are wondering about is:

What in the hell was Berger thinking?

I think there are only three explanations.
1. He was trying to destroy embarassing information.
2. He wanted to bulk up his pants to impress the sexy receptionist.
3. He was out of Depends and needed something absorbant.

Berger didn’t stick anything in his pants, Sen. Chambliss claimed that affront without any proof. And this investigation is months old, but it was leaked right now, right before the 9/11 Commission report was slated to be released.

Miles,

They do search your folios and briefcases even when not lookinag at classified documents at the Archves. Point is - taking notes of classified documents is illegal (until the notes themselves are de-classified) and he did it FIVE times. Each time he accidently took documents. EACH TIME HE ACCIDENTLY TOOK DOCUMENTS???? Was this probably a politically motivated leak. Definately. But, showing that a major dem national security authority has commiited no less than five FELONIES and “lost” critical papers that may or may not have been critical of his administration is a valid story none-the-less is it not? I remember being disillusioned by Watergate. Do you think the dems made political hay with those felonies? And they were right to do so. And what about the prison abuse scandal - already months old before the New York Times ran 48 front page stories on it.

Since Berger was working for Kerry - a full investigation is called for. NOW. Or do you think Michael Moore will do a movie on it someday? Maybe he’ll investigate Chappaquiddick while he’s at it. Come on and be a man - Berger really really fucked up and its AT LEAST POSSIBLE HE PURPOSELY DESTROYED INCRIMINATING PAPERS - Admit it.

First of all I never claimed Berger didn’t do anything wrong, I was just criticizing this incorrect “Trousergate” crap about his pants. There was already an ongoing investigation that was handling this and the Justice department has yet to levy criminal charges against him, when they do then justice can decide if he’s a bastard.

12. Kahn Says:

Think about this - the best time for the Republicans to leak this would be October - not now. Once the Kerry camp found out about it (when did Berger tell them do you think?). Its actually possible that THEY leaked it to get it over with as soon as possible. Just as the pants thing MIGHT not be true (he did have to smuggle the documents out remember), it is actually possibvle that the Democrats leaked this. In fact - its probable.

13. Kahn Says:
July 22nd, 2004 at 12:31 pm

Miles - FYI
“Mr. Berger became the subject of a criminal investigation by the Justice Department in January, several weeks after staffers at the archives saw him stuffing classified notes into his pants and noticed that several top-secret documents were missing.”

Yes - down his pants

14. Miles Davis Says:
July 22nd, 2004 at 1:31 pm

Yes Berger could have told someone about it and then it could have been leaked that way but that doesn’t make much sense. Leaking it right now and trying to connect it to the 9/11 commission report, making the report seem less credible to some people, seems like a stronger rationale for the leak than the Dems leaking it.

Not down his pants, into his pockets. Arguing the pants point is really dumb, I just don’t want to hear “Trousergate” everytime this is discussed.

15. Kahn Says:
July 22nd, 2004 at 2:14 pm

Miles - down his pants is a quote. Thats what made the staff suspicious - stop re-writing reality!

16. Jay Says:
July 22nd, 2004 at 7:40 pm

Berger did something wrong (stealing documents) and stepped down. Bush fought the whole creation of a 9/11 Commission and Matt calls Bush the greatest human being that ever walked the earth.

17. Miles Davis Says:
July 22nd, 2004 at 8:03 pm

“into his pants” not down his pants.

18. Kahn Says:
July 22nd, 2004 at 11:39 pm

Um, OK. Are your pant horizontal or use some dimension we’re unfamiliar with? Into his pants, as opposed into his pockets (the way most people would say it) denotes “down his pants”. Please don’t be so obtuse.

And, why are you latching on this point? And, what does Matts opinion of Bush got to do with it. Tell ya what - take your Prozac before answering, OK?
