John Kerry Offends Familes of 9-11 Victims

By Matt Margolis | July 13, 2004

Bound not to make headlines across the country, some families of 9/11 victims are (to say the least) not happy with John Kerry:

Sen. John F. Kerry upset some families of 9/11 victims yesterday when he arrived - late - to a private memorial dedication in a sirened motorcade and glad-handed as though he were on the campaign trail.

The senator, in Boston for the day, hopped in his motorcade at the Four Seasons, drove around the Boston Public Garden and arrived at the memorial with his sizable entourage in tow.

Press were kept away but several family members, speaking privately, said they were miffed that Kerry arrived after most other pols - such as Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, Rep. Martin T. Meehan, and Attorney General Tom Reilly - had all left.

One 9/11 widow said of Kerry, “I bet he couldn’t even name anybody on that wall.”

Others said they were disturbed that the Kerry campaign allowed television crews to film over the Public Garden fence - capturing video of Kerry with grieving family members in the midst of his presidential campaign.

Kerry’s response was typical damage control rhetoric:

Kerry’s aides said the event was non-political.

“As a senator from this state, and as an American, Sen. Kerry came to pay his private respects to families and friends who suffered a great loss on 9/11,” spokesman David Wade said.

“This isn’t a day for politics, and John Kerry attended the ceremony quietly and respectfully without staff in tow, keeping the media at a distance,” Wade said. “John Kerry remembers what it was like to lose friends on that terrible day, and it’s seared in him as an American why we must do whatever it takes to keep Americans safe and destroy the terrorists.”

Not at a day for politics?

Kerry stayed much longer than the other leaders, shaking hands, posing for photos before he left with just as much commotion.

So Kerry was too busy to show up on time, yet had ample time to stick around long after other pols had left to take advantage of a good photo-op?

George W. Bush can’t rally our troops on an aircraft carrier or in the middle of Baghdad on Thanksgiving Day without being accused by the left (and the press) of doing it for the photo-op. Kerry, on the hand, arrives late to a memorial dedication service for 9/11 victims for whatever reason his spokesman wants to give (although considering all the campaign/fundraising he’s been doing lately, one can only guess why) and has the audacity to stay late and pose for pictures?

While it was appropriate for Kerry to attend (of course showing up late was inappropriate) for him to take advantage of a 9/11 memorial dedication for political gain is just wrong.

As Kerry spokesman David Wade said, it wasn’t a day for politics… perhaps he should have told that to John Kerry.

wow imagine how mad they’d be if he tried to stop the 911 commission from doing its job then held back tons of evidence from that commission. Wow.

Todd - good dodge buddy. But, what do you think about Kerry acting like a jerk. Some kind insensitive politician isn’t he?

Kerry says that a president should be willing to speak to groups who don’t agree with him or like him. I challenge him to come to the NRA HQ in Fairfaz, VA and explain his position on limiting my civil rights in relation to the 2nd Amendment. Does’t really fit this blog - but I couldn’t find one that did.

I’ll bet you a million bucks there’s some soldiers who do.

Some people hate him, some people don’t. It happens. Not all soldiers are for him, not all against him.

Didn’t we already have this argument?

Maybe you haven’t heard this, but a great many families of 9/11 victims have been furious with Bush for some time. They are not thrilled with the Dems either, but their biggest beef with the Dems is that they haven’t opposed Bush enough. See, for example,
