A Real Blow To Clinton?

By Matt Margolis | June 8, 2004

(pun intended)

Via Drudge:

Former President Bill Clinton has privately expressed anger he has apparently been left off the speakers list of Friday’s Reagan State Funeral, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned.

“President Clinton really held out all hope the funeral would be a nonpartisan event, like Nixon’s was,” a top Clinton source said on Tuesday morning. “He’s angry and disappointed neither he nor President Carter have been asked to speak, as of yet.”

The top source says Clinton has been critical that both Bush presidents will address the crowd gathered at National Cathedral.

Nixon’s vice president Gerald Ford did not speak at Nixon’s funeral.

Clinton’s inner circle is convinced Nancy Reagan has personally shut out Clinton from any high-profile participation.

“It is a state funeral, using tax dollars,” the top Clinton insider explained.

State funeral or not, if Nancy Reagan doesn’t want him to speak, it doesn’t matter. Ultimately, the decision is hers. It’s a shame Clinton can’t just accept the wishes of Nancy and stop begging for some time in the spotlight.

Sounds to me like Clinton is trying to push politics into this situation. George H.W. Bush served as Reagan’s Vice-President for 8 years, and George W. Bush is the President, it is appropriate for both of them to speak. Clinton on the other hand is no longer President, therefore, while his invitation may be oligatory, his speaking at the funeral is not. Even being a state funeral, that doesn’t mean the Reagan family can’t decide who gets to speak at Ronnie’s funeral.

I find it inappropriate for anyone to insist speaking at such a function if they were not requested to do so. Nancy Reagan is the person in the best position to determine who would be appropriate to honor the memory of her husband at his funeral.

I agree that Nancy should get to call those shots, but your accusation that Clinton is politicizing it is stupid. Your source is a Drudge report claiming that Clinton said something privately.

Matt - you keep on trying to make this funeral something ugly for your own political ends. It’s a lousy thing to do, and you’re doing a lousy job of it, too.

No, but Clinton IS politicizing his reactions. Be a man Willy and realize that not everyone wants to hear you speak on every topic every time you are out in public.

If Willy was the sitting President then it would be completely appropriate for him to speak, but he isn’t.

Is this the same Matt Margolis who was so outraged when Paul Wellstone’s family asked Cheney not to attend his funeral?

Are they asking Clinton not to ATTEND the funeral? No.
Is Clinton currently holding a national elected office? No.
Is Jimmy Carter whining that he wasn’t asked to speak? No.

    Bad analogy.

Oh, that’s right. Cheney was “selected”. I forgot.

Actually, Action Jack, I’ve never made a comment about the Wellstone Memorial Political Rally. I even searched my blog to check… never any mention about Cheney’s non-invitation to that event.

Nevertheless Bruce is right, Cheney’s non-invitation is a lot worse than Clinton’s not speaking…

    Wait a second…

A Clinton actually wanting to steal the spotlight at an event?! Sure you jest! Quite frankly this story made my day — the fact that me-me-me Clinton is continuing to make a big fuss about this after the fact just shows what a complete idiot he is.

Is he so arrogant (of course) that he actually thinks he should automatically be allowed to speak? Geez, it’s bad enough Kerry is using this opportunity for a photo op now Clinton wants to as well?

I don’t trust Kerry or Clinton if you ask me…

And I don’t trust Drudge, but even he says these were PRIVATE conversations that HE is making public.

I think Nancy probably asked herself, “Who would Ron want to speak at his funeral?” I think it’s safe to say that he probably wouldn’t have wanted Bill Clinton or Jimmy Carter speaking since they basically stood for the opposite of what he always worked for.

If these were private conversations, then he’s obviously not trying to steal the spotlight. That’s the whole point behind them being private; other people arn’t supposed to know about it?

Clinton needs to get educated. He is a loser and a cheat. No one cares about Clinton, he is a disgrace to the country. Why would the Reagan’s or anyone for that matter want Clinton to speak at their funeral. The only people worse that Clinton is Hillary and Kerry. They will all find out when the election is held in Nov.

Instead of putting down a point, the only thing you just did was hurl insults.

    That’s not even debating

Re: Cheney’s non-invite to the Wellstone memorial–Cheney’s attendance would have created too many security issues. The administration sent Tommy Thompson instead.
