Good News For The Economy, Bad News For Kerry and the Democrats
By Matt Margolis | May 27, 2004
Once again, we have more good news on our economy:
The economy grew at a 4.4 percent annual rate in the first quarter of this year, slightly faster than previously thought and fresh evidence that the recovery possessed good momentum as it headed into the current quarter.
The increase in gross domestic product from January through March reported by the Commerce Department on Thursday marked an improvement from both the 4.2 percent pace first estimated for the quarter a month ago and the 4.1 percent growth rate registered in the final quarter of 2003.
New applications for unemployment benefits also dropped, another piece of evidence of the economy’s recovery.
Although consumers and the federal government did their part to support the economy in the first quarter, the better reading on GDP for the period in large part reflected stronger investment by businesses to build up inventories, a good sign that companies are more confident about the economy’s prospects.
From April to June, the economy is expected to grow at a rate in the range of 4.5 percent to 5 percent, according to some analysts.
More bleak news for the Democrats, consumer spending increased also:
Consumers, whose spending accounts for roughly two-thirds of all economic activity in the United States, increased their spending in the first quarter at a 3.9 percent rate. That was slightly stronger than previously estimated and up from a 3.2 percent growth rate in the fourth quarter.
Of course, I blame the Bush tax cuts.
With the economy being a key issue in this presidential election, the good news for the economy is bad news for Kerry and the Democrats.

what about the huge fall in new homes? What a huge drop…so sudden and quick. Something’s wrong when the real estate market is losing big.

All I know is Target’s packed on the weekends, and every week it seems like a movie is breaking some kind of box office record for ticket sales. More importantly, I have sufficient disposable income to go to the range tonight and shoot large caliber handguns. God bless America. If this is what the Dems call a faltering economy, bring it on.

Most of my relatives who are not in a union have suffered economically during Bush’s administration. And I see more bums in my town but Western Massachusetts hasn’t been vibrant for a great while.

Amen, Matt! May I add something about Bush’s “tax cuts for the rich”? I was unemployed for 8 months last year (I made about $16,000 a year)and after I filed my taxes in late Feb, I figured that maybe I’d get a hundred bucks or so at best. Granted, I claim 0 exemptions when I get hired at a new job, but I just about dropped my teeth when I got my BIGGEST tax return ever of…………………..Drumroll,please………………………………………………………
NINE HUNDRED AND FIVE BUCKS!
So much for the “tax cuts for the rich” bull shit. Thanks to GW Bush, I put away seed money for a new business, and hey, a guy’s gotta play, so I spurged on a new PS2…Take that, you clueless commie dumb-o-craps!

Micheal what were you unemployed for? My brother was laid off from Aetna during the 2 week training period. They laid off all others in training and all the training coordinators. It was a customer service job and it is very likely that the jobs were outsourced to an Indian customer service office.

Good news for America is good news for Democrats, too. If some people are regaining the jobs they lost earlier in Bush’s single term, don’t look to this American Democrat to view that as bad news. Bush has supplied plenty of reasons to lose the election, and he is already doing so.

the democrats would much rather see the economy bust right now - because it would help them politically. they care more about their own power than fixing anything.

Where’s your evidence for that statement, Matt? Are you sure you’re not just projecting your own anti-American, pro-Republican crasiness?
Actually, to be fair, a lot of “analysts” talk this kind of nonsense, even to the extent of discussing whether a terrorist attack would help the Republicans. To me, this is just political hate speech, when either side resorts to it.

regardless of whether dems want the economy to bust right now, politically it would work to their advantage for it to burst rather than boom.
