Behind Closed Doors?

By Matt Margolis | April 8, 2004

So what gives? A whole bunch of commotion is made over Condi Rice testifying in public and under oath, and today she does, doing a fabulous job, and then tucked away from the public eye, was Bill Clinton who also testified… behind closed doors…

Former U.S. President Bill Clinton testified behind closed doors to the national commission investigating the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on Thursday, the panel said.

“The commission found the former president forthcoming and responsive to its questions. We appreciate the excellent cooperation he and his associates have given to us,” the commission said in a brief statement.

Clinton appeared before the panel in closed session shortly after White House national security adviser Condoleezza Rice testified at an open hearing.

President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney are also expected to testify together in a private meeting with the commission. The date of that session was not known.

Why isn’t Clinton out in the public eye during his testimony? I want to know why he sat on his ass with he legs spread for 4 years while the World Trade Center gets bombed, as well as our embassies in Africa, and the U.S.S. Cole.

I want to know why doing nothing was an “effective counterterrorism strategy.” I want the answers from Slick Willy. I want him held accountable for his statements to the commission. Make him testify in public! Make him testify under oath!

Where’s the uproar from the people who were pulling for Condi’s public testimony? Shouldn’t they be up in arms right now? Why isn’t the media jumping on top of this story?

What the hell are you talking about??

Bush is testifying behind closed doors AND only with uncle Dick Cheney. He can’t testify by himself.
    Because he is an idiot.

And don’t give me anything about executive privilege because I guarantee that you don’t know what you are talking about.

Looks like some people haven’t the wit to differentiate between a sitting president and an ex-president. Of course, considering what Clinton was up to while in office, public testimony would probably violate FCC guidelins.

Putting Clinton under oath is pointless, he already has a pass to perjure, remember?

Bush is an idiot? Ah, it must be an odd day - on even days he is an evil genius. On weekends and holidays he’s a puppet. /sarcasm
President Bush is one of the best practitioners of Political Judo around today. The man seems able to trip up his opposition in their own words and/or deeds without any real effort. Of course, that may be the quality of the opposition…
Why is Mr. Clinton testifying behind closed doors? It’s been over three years since he’s been in office, and his detailed plans for destroying AQ have been proven to be hot air instead of fact. With the declassifying of documents and other testimony, surely his words wouldn’t be a matter of national security. Just highly embarrassing…

I fed my dog too many beans and now she’s leaving streams of Cole Whitaker everywhere! I’m glad though, I wouldn’t want that inside any creature - except a leftist (liberal is too dignified - pass it on).

I think the main reason Clinton is not public in his testimony is because Hillary will not let him say anything public because it would be very detrimental to her bid for the Whitehouse, after all as first lady she knew all that was going on, she knows the truth would hurt her. And she most certainly would not want to be labeled the number one reason that Al Q is now acting with impunity (well not anymore Thank You Mr. Bush)

Clinton made a deal months ago to testify under oath behind closed doors. Condi refused to testify at ALL, then only behind closed doors off the record, and finally under oath in public when the heat was too much. She should have just agreed to talk under oath in the first place. Bush won’t talk except off the record with Cheney present. As far as what Clinton knew or didn’t know, Bush could help by turning over all the Clinton-era documents that the 9/11 Commission asked for. He has only turned over about 25% of them.

In other developments, Howard Stern just got dropped from Clear Channel for daring to be anti-Bush and Bush’s dream of ending overtime pay was destroyed in the Senate two weeks ago. Oh…and there’s this war going on in Iraq, too. I guess Bush will have to put another flight suit on again.

Jay, give the White House time. Be patient, sometimes it takes a while to find subpoenaed documents. Perhaps those documents will be found sitting in the Map Room in 2 years’ time, like the Rose Law Firm Papers.

Clinton made a deal, huh? Makes sense to me. As far as Dr. Rice’s refusal goes, I personally don’t blame her, especially after reading the transcript. Softball questions followed by ‘have you stopped beating your wife yet’ questions. Political grandstanding and fishing for soundbites without any usefulness whatsoever. A colossal waste of time IMO. We can cheer for one person or the other scoring points like a debate team in school, but the 9-11 commission is NOT doing the job it was supposedly formed for, at least not while the cameras are on. Talking in private (and bringing along a witness, in President Bush’s case) makes sense to me. The commission may be able to get some actual work done that way. I’m probably being too optomistic, though.

Like your sense of priorities, Jay. Poor rich Stern being dumped is of course much more important than our soldiers fighting (and winning) in Iraq. /sarcasm
Lastly, President Bush can put on another flight suit, but Senator Kerry can’t write himself up for another Silver Star.

Cole - Keep spouting the distortions and spin as truth and you might earn an official Karl Rove proof tinfoil hat autographed by the great Noam Chomsky for your efforts.
