Matt Margolis Blog - One Year Blogiversary

Monday, March 15th, 2004

Matt Margolis reflects on one year of blogging.

She Said, “My Liberator,”

Sunday, March 14th, 2004

Jettison over at my other blog, Blogs For Bush, brought this to my attention. President Bush and the First Lady spoke on the progress in global women’s human rights this week. Here’s a portion of Bush’s remarks:

I want to thank my friend, Dr. Raja Khuzai, who’s with us today. This is the third time we have met. The first time we met, she walked into the Oval Office — let’s see, was it the first time? It was the first time. The door opened up. She said, “My liberator,” and burst out in tears — (laughter) — and so did I.

Dr. Khuzai also was there to have Thanksgiving dinner with our troops. And it turned out to be me, as well. Of course, I didn’t tell her I was coming. (Laughter.) But I appreciate that, and now she’s here again. I want to thank you, Doctor, for your hard work on the writing of the basic law for your people. You have stood fast, you have stood strong. Like me, you’ve got liberty etched in your heart, and you’re not going to yield. And you are doing a great job and we’re proud to have you back. Thanks for coming.

A touching moment indeed… Nowhere to be found in the media.

We Once Had Resolve

Saturday, March 13th, 2004

Yesterday, 8 million people took to the streets in Spain following bomb attacks that kill about 200 people the day before. They to show their grief and express their fury over terrorism.

It’s interesting isn’t it? The American people as a whole have virtually forgotten 9-11 and now the people of Spain are experiencing something very similar to “September 12th Americanism”

We were once united, we once had resolve. Two years gone, and we’ve reverted back to “September 10th Americanism” - where terrorism ranks 6th as an important issue for Americans when choosing a President - just above gay marriage…

In Madrid, the crowd roared, “A people united will never be defeated.”

The people of Spain are pulling together. They now understand what it’s like to be a September 12th American. Unfortunately for our country, we’re living in a September 12th world with September 10th complacency. Perhaps our success in the war on terror has resulted in our return back to the false feelings of safety. Out of sight out of mind?

We have been witnessing a war on the war on terrorism. The resolve once possesed 2 years ago has been exchanged for political opportunism, with accusations of “hijacked emotions” in the wake of the World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks.

People feign outrage over President Bush’s use of imagery from 9-11 in a campaign ad - when, as the events of 3-11 have proven, America does need to be reminded about that day. We can look at what’s happening in Spain now and we’ll see a reflection of ourselves from post-September 11, 2001.

As Americans, we’ve reached a point where even “Never Forget” has become a post-tragedy cliche that serves only as a stamp of acknowledgement that something bad happened, but not as a painful reminder.

Perhaps we should be exchanging our “Never Forget” buttons, pins, stickers, and banners for ones that read “Please Remember”

Is This The Best Excuse They Got?

Wednesday, March 10th, 2004

The John Kerry campaign is making a relatively easy oversight into a major blunder by making farfetched excuses for them.

A spokeman for John Kerry told the Boston Herald that he believed Kerry’s website was struck by “a virus,” in order to explain the profanities discovered by the Drudge Report.

The Kerry campaign didn’t need to stoop that low and make excuses trying to absolve themselves of responsiblity for the profanities. The profanities came from other copywritten material republished on the site. A simple “We did not realize the profanties were left in the quoted material and we will fix those immediately,” would have been sufficient.

Why did the Kerry campaign feel they had to make a bogus cover story for this little thing? Old habit I suppose.

Kerry’s True Colors

Monday, March 8th, 2004

The rich white Senator from Massachusetts should be regretting his poor choice of words last week when he said “President Clinton was often known as the first black president. I wouldn’t be upset if I could earn the right to be the second.”

Well, a civil rights group is now demanding an apology.

The head of a civil rights and legal services advocacy group wants Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry to apologize for saying he wouldn’t be upset if he could be known as the second black president.

Paula Diane Harris, founder of the Andrew Young National Center for Social Change, had a few words on this in a statement released today.:

John Kerry is not a black man– he is a privileged white man who has no idea what it is in this country to be a poor white in this country, let alone a black man. Civil Rights leaders in this nation sit back and ignore these types of comments, a practice that further insults African Americans. It seems that all these leaders care about is their personal agendas in how a “John Kerry” will keep up their personal causes. They forget about the issues that affect our people, especially our young people, who are struggling every single day to obtain an equal, quality public education.

Ouch. I’m sure John Kerry didn’t expect his stupid comment to ever ketchup to him. Perhaps Kerry needs to rethink his strategy to win the support of the African-American community. Ms. Harris continued:

Kerry’s comment is another example of the mentality of some members of the Democrat Party who take black votes for granted. It is time our votes were earned. This election is too important for ALL Americans to have time for this type of theatrical statement. To the candidates, I say, “Stick to the issues that affect ALL Americans and run on your voting record and the issues. Stop trying to single out one minority group in this country for their votes. If you want black votes, EARN THEM by sticking to the issues in what you as president are going to do if you are elected.”

And what did the Kerry campaign have to say in defense of his stupid comment?

“This was intended as a light-natured remark about President Clinton’s strong legacy with African Americans It is a legacy that John Kerry would like to build upon if elected president. John Kerry has a record of fighting for civil rights and as president he will continue this fight.”

Oh really? Does he feel their pain too? Clearly, the Kerry campaign didn’t get the message.

When interviewed the other day, Kerry claimed that Bush’s use of images of 9-11 were inappropriate, and cited the reactions of the firefighters (well, at least the firefighters union which endorsed him,) saying “given the fact [the firemen] are uncomfortable with it I think it is inappropriate.”

Well, I guess since this civil rights group is not comfortable with Kerry’s exploitation of black voters he ought to stop pandering to minorities so inappropriately in the future - at the very least he could apologize!

John Kerry also defended his use of Vietnam because he “was there” it’s his, and it was a war he fought in.

Has John Kerry looked in a mirror lately? He’s white. He’s rich. Where’s the connection to being black? Apparently, while Vietnam belongs to him – he must think the black vote belongs to him too.

Ms. Harris really drove the point home when she said, “Until you are born black in America and have walked in our shoes you will never earn the right as a white man to be called a black president.”

A Tale of Two Standards

Sunday, March 7th, 2004

As John Kerry sits back as his supporters raise their fists over the Bush campaign’s use of 9-11 images for a few seconds in a campaign ad, there’s nothing more telling than his double standard for Bush’s use of 9-11 images and his own use of Vietnam images and the constant reminding of his Vietnam service in his campaign.

During an interview, Kerry when asked about the appropriateness of using the images, he said:

I thought the firemen, the firefighters and the families spoke volumes … and eloquently about that and I think that they made clear that they did not.

And of course Kerry defended his use of Vietnam in his campaign, citing what he thinks is a key difference:

I was there, and it was mine and it was a war I fought in. ..

Excuse me? Does John Kerry own Vietnam? Does he have the rights to exploit an entire war for political gain?

“[The firemen] spoke about it. … Given the fact they are uncomfortable with it i think it is inappropriate.”

Kerry is wrong. The firefighter’s union spoke out against it - and it just so happens that the firefighter’s union endorsed John Kerry late last year.

And the families? It is also intersting that the group of families speaking against the ads are a part of a group called “September Eleventh Families For a Pieace Tomorrow” which is a project of the Tides Center, which is fundly by the Vira Heinz Endowment and the Howard Heinz Endowment - which are chaired by none other than Teresa Heinz, wife of gold-digger John Kerry.

So what we have here is a group of Kerry partisans crying foul… Geee, what did you think they would do. Added to that, Kerry thinks he owns Vietnam - which apparently he must have bought the rights to with Teresa Heinz’s fortune.

Kerry needs to learn a few things. For one, George W. Bush was President when 9-11 happened. He went there, he saw the destruction, he met with the firefighters, he led our country in the wake of that national tragedy. it doesn’t belong to him, or the families, or the firemen… It belongs to all of us. It is part of our history, it affected all of us, and it was also a part of George W. Bush’s presidency and his actions in the aftermath are a testimony of his superior leadership.

Vietnam is a part of our history too. It doesn’t belong to John Kerry.

The images and memories of 9-11 belong to all of us. Bush’s leadership after 9-11 is part of that history. Just as John Kerry’s record of voting against our military and inteligence communites is a history we all have the pleasure of using. Only John Kerry’s voting record is a history he doesn’t want to be remembered.

Bush In Beantown!

Friday, March 5th, 2004

My man, President George W. Bush, is going to be in Boston this month!

President Bush is planning a fund-raiser — in rival John Kerry’s hometown.

The president will host a $2,000-a-person event at the Park Plaza Hotel on March 25. Further information about the fund-raiser was not available, as the Bush-Cheney campaign said details were still being worked out.

The hotel is only a few blocks from Boston’s Beacon Hill neighborhood, and the home of Sen. Kerry, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee.

Anyone want to give me $2,000 so I can go?
