Howard Dean Wins … Vermont?

By Matt Margolis | March 3, 2004

As if we didn’t have enough to chuckle over the Democrats… Howard Dean has finally won a primary.

Too bad he withdrew from the race two weeks ago.

Vermont Democrats showed little concern that Dean withdrew from the race Feb. 18 after going winless in the first 17 contests, favoring their former governor by a 2-to-1 margin over front-runner John Kerry exit polls showed.

“I think it makes a statement across the nation that he has supporters still out there for him,” said Kim Paradee, 34, after voting for Dean in Bristol.

Dean himself was low key about the victory. Aides said he did not plan to do anything more than release a statement. He planned to attend high school sporting events in the evening

But how much of a victory is this? Apparently, John Edwards didn’t even appear on the Vermont ballot. Nevertheless, Dean apparently still resonates with angry voters.

He also appeared to win over angry voters. Nearly two-thirds said they were angry at President Bush and nearly two-thirds of those voters went for Dean. Four in 10 voters said the most important quality in a candidate is standing up for what he believes, and of those, four out of five went for Dean.

If the people of Vermont want Howard Dean, they can have him.

Interestingly enough, Super Tuesday also saw the townspeople of Killington, Vermont overwhelming endorse seceding from the state –a direct result of a tax hike signed by Howard Dean back in 1997.

Well Howard Dean, mazel tov! You finally won a primary. I must help that the one state that wanted you is your home state.
