Hillary Takes a Stab At Stand-Up Comedy

By Matt Margolis | February 29, 2004

Some things you have to see to believe…

In a foreign policy speech at a Washington think tank, Sen. Hillary Clinton chided President Bush for not thanking her husband for handing the current administration such a strong military.

What exactly did Hillary say?:

“During the 2000 campaign, I recall Vice President Cheney saying that there is almost nothing you can do to improve the quality of a force created by your predecessors. And then after the Gulf War, he wrote a letter to former President Reagan thanking him for building the military that fought so capably.

“Well, I don’t know, but I don’t think any letters have yet arrived on the desks of anyone associated with the Clinton Administration.”

Does Hillary want to know why? The WorldNetDaily articles point out several reasons why not only should the Clinton Administration not be thanked for the state the military was left in, but be condemned for decimating it.

From 1990 to 1998, active Army ranks were reduced from 770,000 to 495,000. After the cuts, the Army had 10 active combat divisions compared to the 18 it had at the start of Operation Desert Storm in 1991. The following also were cut:

  • 293,000 reservists;
  • two reserve divisions;
  • 20 Air Force and Navy air wings along with approximately 2,000 combat aircraft;
  • 232 strategic bombers;
  • 13 ballistic-missile submarines with 3,114 nuclear warheads on 232 missiles;
  • 500 ICBMs;
  • four aircraft carriers;
  • 121 surface-combat vessels and attack submarines, plus all the support basing, transport and logistic access, tanks, armored fighting vehicles, helicopters, etc.

In a real slap in the face to our military, Hillary said in her speech that women were better off under the rule of Saddam Hussein!!!

When I was [in Iraq] and met with women members of the governing councils and local–of the national governing councils and local governing councils in Baghdad and Kirkuk, they were starting to express concerns about some of the pullbacks in the rights that they were given under Saddam Hussein. He was an equal opportunity oppressor, but on paper women had rights; they went to school; they participated in the professions; they participated in government; and business and, as long as they stayed out of his way, they had considerable freedom of movement.

As long as they stayed out of Saddam’s way? Is Hillary suggesting things are really worse off now then they were with the rape rooms operational? What exactly is Hillary trying to prove by praising our military, but then claiming that things were better before Saddam’s regime was toppled?

Read Hillary’s entire speech, there are a whole bunch of gems in there to keep Bush bloggers busy - after they stop laughing.

    Trick question time: Who was the president who put forth military budgets for the funding of airpower such as the F-14, F-15, B-2 bomber (among other things)?

    Hint: Wasn’t clinton

    Matt: I’ve been trying to e-mail you about a possible op-ed article I would like to write for blogs for bush but your e-mails are sent back to me. I thought it would be a good idea to hear from an African American who is an ardent Bush supporter and why I like many others reject the liberal mainstreams ideas of race relations. Please contact me.

    Matt, I am quite sure that women were better off in many aspects during Sadam, although the country as a whole was much worse off. Here are a couple of quotes from another conservative blog, Cox & Forkum:

    Ms Inam al-Zubaidi, an 18-year-old female student, wears a headscarf to avoid harassment by fanatical religious groups.

    A few weeks ago, local newspapers reported the shooting death of a young woman who worked in a video store — a placed deemed ‘pornographic’ by extremists.

    Mr Mustafa al-Iqabi sports a beard and tries to get home by 10pm to avoid religious squads who cruise the streets at night and take the law into their own hands.

    Many residents of Iraq’s second-largest city worry that these vigilante groups, which have emerged in recent months, want to impose an Islamic state on Basra similar to the one in Iran.[…]

    Many people blame the violence on some of the 150 small political and religious groups that have sprung up in this city of two million.

    Most worrisome have been the kidnappings, and sometimes murder, of women whose actions have been deemed un-Islamic.

    Hillary Clinton: “Mass graves??? Rape rooms??? I don’t care; where are the WMDs?”

    Bush stated in his run up to war that if Saddam did not disarm, the US would disarm him. Naturally, that implies that if Saddam DID disarm, we would not invade. Bush never said, if Saddam does disarm, we will still invade due to him being a brutal dictator. So while all this talk about rape rooms and mass graves is compelling… its still just after the fact justification and yes… revisionist history.

    Deal with it.

    Mass graves and rape rooms are a “compelling” issue? Tell that to the Iraqis that have lost friends and family because of Saddam’s dictatorship. I’m sure their grief isn’t “compelling” enough for anyone to justify this war. So in hindsight, liberation of Iraq: Bad. Stopping the mass murder of innocent Iraqis: Who cares; WMDs still not found. Is that how it is?

    Sorry Cole, your assertion is incorrect. According to the resolutions, Saddam had to provide proof that he disarmed or the U.S. would invade. He refused to provide proof. What, were we supposed to just take his word for it?

    Well, it comes down to Hussein told the truth and Bush lied. I never thought it would be that way. Like it or not, despite what Bush is saying about “power transfer” we will be stuck in Iraq for years to come. If yesterday’s terrorist attack that killed 271 Shiites (who then blamed the US) is any indication it will get bloody and we will be looking at a draft sooner or later. And when it finally ends, after all years and the billions and American lives–the Iraqi people will elect an Islamic theocracy and there will be no WMDs and quite possibly more expensive oil. Meanwhile Saudi Arabia and Pakistan will continue to get a free pass. That’s the breaks.

    Oh, so you trust Saddam Hussein huh? Now that’s rich… Maybe you think OBL is “misunderstood” and is a trustworthy fellow.

    So we’ll spend time in Iraq… BFD.. we’ve got troops all over the world - i don’t see you bitching about that.

    You need to start using your brain Jay…

    “If there’s one thing us actors know…, besides that their’s no WMDs….” Kerry-Penn ‘04!!!

    Blech! We just need to give Saddam a big hug and show him that he’s loved.

  13. Rifki Says:

    Once again, the end of Saddam’s brutal dictatorship that resulted in the deaths of thousands of Iraqis means nothing compared to whether WMDs are immediately found or not. Are liberals always thinking about instant gratification? If this had been a Democrat-led administration that waged war against Iraq, they (the Dems) would be giving themselves parades for “freeing Iraq and its people from the oppressing Saddam.” But since it is Bush that helped liberate Iraq (yes, the U.S. had allies), the Dems feel like their moment of glory was taken from them. So give credit where credit is due, otherwise explain to the Iraqis that had lost family and friends under Saddam’s regime why this war was a sham. I’d like to see Sean Penn and Susan Sarandon tell these grieving families why they think they’re better off had Saddam stayed in power. Or better yet, send Howard “YEEEEAAAARRRGH!” Dean over there and let him kiss Saddam’s ass in front of the grief-stricken.
