White Is Beautiful

By Matt Margolis | February 15, 2004

Some stories are just so great…

A student group at Roger Williams University is offering a new scholarship for which only white students are eligible, a move they say is designed to protest affirmative action.

The application for the $50 award requires an essay on “why you are proud of your white heritage” and a recent picture to “confirm whiteness.”

“Evidence of bleaching will disqualify applicants,” says the application, issued by the university’s College Republicans.

Now that is great. I love it. Now, before some liberal idiots starts screaming “You bigoted, racist, asshole…” Look at what Jason Mattera, president of the school’s College Republicans had to say:

“White kids are at a handicap,” Mattera told The Providence Journal. “Handing out scholarships based on someone’s color is absurd.”

The stunt has angered some at the university, but the administration is staying of the fray. The school’s provost said it is a student group’s initiative and is not endorsed by Roger Williams.

Hey, if it’s equality we’re after… bring it on!

…Or get rid of race-based scholarships, admissions, hirings, etc. etc. etc.

I seem to remember a little publicized story about a young white South African boy who was campaigning for some African-American award at his grade school. Since the child was from Africa and immigrated to America, the “title” actually fit. So he and his friends campaigned for him, he was ridiculed, chastised and suspended from school for a short time. I guess he wasn’t “African” enough. In my opinion, if you are of black skin and you’re waiving the banner of African-American, you’re a no-good, lying, snake-in-the-grass if you weren’t directly born on African soil. You have no claim to the title “African” -anything if you weren’t born there and are claiming to be a US citizen. But then again, bigotry and racism don’t claim the attribute “common sense” and is no respector of persons.

    Equal Rights… For Whites Too!

Matt over at MattMargolis.com sent me to look at his post on this article about a student group at Roger Williams University offering a scholarship for white students… only.

The very thought of this makes my knees buckle. How I wish I was still in my undergraduate school because I’d be making this happen there right away

This scholarship is ridiculous. I’m White, and I don’t come from wealth or advantage but I do benefit from the White privilege that exists in our society every single day. Mattera was quoted as saying: “Many people think that coming from a white background you’re automatically privileged, you’re automatically rich and your parents pay full tuition. That’s just not the case.” Very True Jason, but how many other ethnic minorities can you say have any kind of “automatic privilege” or are “automatically rich”? it is time for Whites (I’m one of you and I’m calling you all out on this) to admit that we benefit from White privilege every single day and we need to acknowledge that people of color have been oppressed and repressed and discriminated against since the beginning of our nation’s history. In 1964, MLK wrote “It is obvious that if a man is entered at the starting line in a race three hundred years after another man, the first would have to perform some impossible feat in order to catch up with his fellow runner.” Scholarships for minorities and other affirmative action type policies are merely one attempt at leveling the playing field. The problem of racism (by which I mean a system of advantage for Whites- not blatant acts of cruelty against minorities) in this country will not be fixed by scholarships or admissions policies, and yes not all Whites are rich or had every advantage growing up, but Whites, in general, have huge advantages over people of color and it’s time we start running a fair race.

Ok L. Howard, you are correct. Everything you have achieved in life has been the result of an inherent racial benefit. What are YOU going to do about it? Give up your job? After all you got that only because you were a white boy. I am sure some deserving minority was passed over due to your membership in the “white boyz club.”

Ok how about giving up where you live? Obviously the only reason you received your housing is because of illegal housing discrimination.

Give up your high school diploma and get a GED. Obviously your education was influenced by your inherent racial advantage.

Actually why are you posting here? I mean after all, demographically more white males are able to access the Internet. You should give up your computer access. It is unfair for you to have it while so many others don’t.

Hmmm if today society should be corrected by piling on a “white man’s burden” because of their inherent racial success, how can you explain the success of 2nd and 3rd generation asian-americans? Hmmm? They are kicking whitey’s arse in any measurable educational statistics. Obviously they are reaping the same racial benefit that the white folks are.

(Please don’t say that asians didn’t experience the same kind of discrimination that african-americans did. I mean those “chinks” are damn fine workers. They were able to overcome everything we threw at ‘em. Hell Jebbadiah I remember when we used to be able to gun ‘em down at the drop of a hat, sheriff would look the other way. Not to mention work ‘em to the bone. Hell didn’t even halfto pay em most of the time.)

Are you stating that the dagos and WOPs never received any discrimination? How about does damn drunk good for nothing worthless Irish. And let’s not even talk about those idiot pollacks. Hmmm they all look white to me. I guess you are right, they never could have suffered discrimination.

there should be sarcasm tags right before the “chink” comment and right after the pollack comment. Apparently the post didn’t like < .sarcasm. > with no space.

I applaud the student group for having the courage in this “oh my gosh is this policitically correct” society to offer a scholarship for whites only!! In doing some recent research into scholarships that might be available for me - a white, middle aged mom wishing to obtain a higher level degree - I was disgusted by all of the societies and associations offering money for every conceivable minority there is, but nowhere did I find scholarships for whites. Tell me what is wrong with having a whites only scholarship when there are black only scholarships, asian only scholarships, hispanic only scholarships??? There is NOTHING wrong with it! If it’s good for one, then it should be good for all. What needs to happen in this country is that the designation of race or ethnicity needs to be removed from all applications and people need to be evaluated based on merit, accomplishment, intellectual ability, or “true” need. Discrimination, as well as reverse discrimination needs to stop. It’s not right for anyone to have to endure. But enough is enough. Responsibility lies within one’s self. Be responsible for your life’s goals - for your accomplishments - for everything within your own life - stop blaming everyone else or those who are dead - and do what it takes on your own accord to achieve your goals and stop expecting it to be handed out at the expense of everyone else.

Enough is enough and personally, I am sick of it.

Thank you to those Roger Williams students who had the courage to take a stand on what I believe many know in their hearts to be the right thing, but are too afraid to say it!

I am probably the biggest opposer of affirmative action you will ever meet. I am a excellent student( grades, sports, etc.) but it bothers me that no matter how hard I work, because I am white I will be put at a disadvantage for getting into a presigious college, all the while a “minority” student may not have as good a transscript as me but will still be given an edge over me.
