Dean’s Wisconsin Factor
By Matt Margolis | February 5, 2004
Howard Dean, so far unable to win a primary, is now leaving the future of his campaign into the hands of Wisconsin voters on February 17th:
Democrat Howard Dean said on Thursday his once high-flying U.S. presidential bid would be over if he did not win the Wisconsin primary on Feb. 17, declaring “the entire race has come down to this.”
“We must win Wisconsin,” the former Vermont governor said in a memo to supporters. “A win there will carry us to the big states on March 2 — and narrow the field to two candidates. Anything else will put us out of the race.”
Howard Dean, the self-proclaimed “fiscal conservative” who blew $40 million dollars on a gamble he could win in Iowa and New Hampshire, is potentially nearing the end of his campaign. He’s asking his supporters to make $50 contributions in order to raise $700,000 by Sunday in order to cover advertising in Wisconsin. (As of this posting he’s raised just over 172,000.)
“We must launch our new television advertisement on Monday in the major markets in Wisconsin,” he said. “To do that I need your help.”
Howard Dean began with all the momentum and cash that the other candidates envied. He couldn’t win Iowa or New Hampshire. He did not resonate with the voters of South Carolina, New Mexico, Arizona, Delaware, North Dakota, Missouri or Oklahoma.
Dean is now at a point where he has to finish the first lap while John Kerry already has his sights on the finish line. His last resort is a do-or-die in Wisconsin strategy. It is doubtful that Howard Dean is confident he can pull it off in Wisconsin. His new strategy is a departure from from his recent statements that he would be in the race “for the long haul.” It appears that Howard Dean is coming to terms with his failing campaign - and perhaps is tired of fighting a losing battle.
Of course Dean won’t be going out with dignity. While he “admits” to making some mistakes, he blames other candidates for his demise. He whined when his rivals attacked him when he was the frontrunner - yet was perfectly willing to attack Kerry after being dethroned in the aftermath of Iowa. In the end it all meant the same thing: Howard Dean just wasn’t presidential material, and the voters didn’t want to take a chance on him.
Howard Dean won’t need luck in Wisconsin; he’ll need a miracle.

Jason,
I’m confused by your statement. What do you mean by your “river” comment? Thanks!
