Bush Highlights FY 2005 Budget

By Matt Margolis | January 31, 2004

I heard Bush’s Radio Address today, and I was pleased to hear him discuss the budget.

Some key things Bush spoke about:

Bush compared his budget to Clinton’s last budget for FY2001 during his address. A nice touch, if you ask me. Since FY2001:

Then Bush addressed the spending in Washington:

these priorities within a responsible budget. Under my plan, overall discretionary spending will grow at less than 4 percent. And non-security-related spending would rise less than 1 percent, the smallest such proposed increase in 12 years. By exercising spending discipline in Washington, D.C., we will reduce the deficit and meet our most basic priorities.

To assure that Congress observes spending discipline, now and in the future, I propose making spending limits the law. This simple step would mean that every additional dollar the Congress wants to spend in excess of spending limits must be matched by a dollar in spending cuts elsewhere. Budget limits must mean something, and not just serve as vague guidelines to be routinely violated. This single change in the procedures of the Congress would bring further spending restraint to Washington.

Americans expect government to meet its most basic responsibilities — protecting citizens from harm, and promoting prosperity and compassion at home. Americans also expect our government to live within spending limits. My 2005 budget is designed to meet both of these goals, using tax dollars wisely and by focusing resources where they are most needed.

Bush is talking to his conservative base there… The spending has to be curbed.

The Democrats are likely to criticize Bush on the deficit, jobs, etc. etc. It’s getting weak. Since when do the Democrats care about money being spent in Washington? The only time they don’t like money being spent is when they’re not the ones spending it. They are quick to criticize Bush for high spending and deficits but complain that everything is under-funded. They can’t have it both ways.

So let’s see spending go down, taxes stay down, and then the jobs will go up, the economy will get stronger, and I’ll be partying in November after Bush wins reelection!

hey Matty, I am sure someone with your impressive academic pedigree (honors from a prized institution like the Univesity of Hartford!!!) can explain how the Homeland Security budget can increase by ten percent and triple in the same budget?

That line about the 10% was misplaced. it has been omitted now to make it clearer. From 2001 to 2005, the budget tripled, but from the previous year, it had increased 10%
