Can Dean Ketchup to Kerry?

By Matt Margolis | January 26, 2004

Is Kerry losing his post-Iowa bounce? Does Dean have a shot to pull it off tomorrow?

I’m not sure, but the latest polls suggest that Dean is slowly recover:

Democratic presidential contender John Kerry holds a shrinking three-point lead over Howard Dean on the eve of the New Hampshire primary, according to a Reuters/MSNBC/Zogby poll released Monday.

Dean shaved four points off Kerry’s advantage in the latest three-day tracking poll, as supporters who wavered after his dismal third-place Iowa finish and screaming concession speech appeared to be returning to the fold.

Kerry led Dean 31 percent to 28 percent in the new poll, with John Edwards jumping three points to narrowly trail Wesley Clark for third place, 13 percent to 12 percent. Connecticut Sen. Joseph Lieberman remained static at 9 percent.

I really could care less about who wins first or second. Neither Kerry or Dean have a prayer at beating Bush in November.

I know some people will say “But what about that Newsweek poll that says Kerry is beating Bush? I have my own theory on that.

The one thing the Iowa caucuses proved is that Democrats are going to vote for who they honestly believe has the best shot against Bush in November. Publications like Newsweek, known to have bias, are certainly in a position to give a head-to-head poll weighted in favor of the Democrat (in this case Kerry) in order to help give him votes of undecided primary voters and to take votes from Kerry’s rivals.

If CBS and the New York Times can skew their polls like that, so can Newsweek. Kerry is now the darling of the media, and the last thing the Democrats want is Dean to win the nomination - the media may just be interested in helping them out.

I don’t see why newspapers and magazines even bother trying hypothosize who could beat Bush until after the nominee for the Democratic party has been chosen… They’re wasting their efforts…. and it’s hard to say if anyone’s got a prayer until later on in the game anyway. Heck, it’s hard to say who’s going to win the NH primary tomorrow.

Ummm… Matt? All the polls are showing the same result. Zogby’s actually has Bush at 49% approval to 50% disapproval. Yeah… that Zogby.

I don’t go by Zogby. I go by Gallup.
