Racism in the Dean Camp

By Matt Margolis | January 11, 2004

Racism by Democrats is so often overlooked, ignored, or shrugged off by the media, civil rights groups, and liberals. Harry Belafonte called Secretary of State Colin Powell a “house slave” and accused National Security Advisor Condoleeza Rice of ignoring the concerns of black people. “There’s an old saying in the days of slavery.” Belefonte said, “There are those slaves on the plantation and there were those slaves who lived in the big house. You got the privilege of living in the house to serve the master. Colin Powell was permitted to come into the house of the master.”

Today, Fox News reports that Steven Ybarra, a DNC official and regional coordinator of Latinos for Dean has made a racist statement about Latina Republican Senate candidate Rosario Marin, calling her a “house Mexican for the Republicans” for not being true to her race.

Ybarra made this attack in a mass e-mail to “political activists, community leaders and a number of journalists this week,” according to Fox.

Rosario Marin, former mayor of Huntington Park, California, and aid to former governor Pete Wilson, is currently seeking the GOP nomination to compete against California Senator Barbara Boxer. She was also the former U.S. treasurer under President Bush. In response to this racist attack against her, she released the following statement:

Apparently, according to Mr. Ybarra and many of his fellow Democrats, if you are not a liberal Democrat then you shouldn’t be considered a legitimate minority. It doesn’t matter that I’m an immigrant, the daughter of a janitor and a seamstress, or that I had to teach myself English because my first language was Spanish. Ybarra is displaying the same mentality that has led to the reprehensible filibustering of well-qualified women or minority Republican judicial nominees Miguel Estrada, Janice Rogers Brown, Carolyn Kuhl and Priscilla Owen. I’m also in good company with Colin Powell and Condoleeza Rice who have been slandered in recent years simply because they are Republicans. I’m proud to be a Republican and honored to have been appointed U.S. Treasurer by President Bush.

Marin has called on state Democratic leaders to “condemn Ybarra’s hateful and bigoted remark.”

In the typical Dean-like backtracking fashion, Ybarra responded by saying that Marin should be “proud of being called a house Mexican” in the same way he is “proud to be the house Mexican for the Democratic Party.”

If Ybarra really believed this, he would not have sent this attack out in a mass e-mail to activists, community leaders and journalists would he? This was politically motivated hate speech intended to harm Marin’s reputation.

Latino political scholar Fernando Guerra said whatever the intent, the outcome is malicious.

“She is a symbol of what Latinos can do. He is not, and for him to degrade that, it hits many of us, including a liberal Democrat like myself, into thinking, ‘Hey, I am going to, in a sense, react and even begin to be supportive of her because of these statements,’” Guerra said.

Marin also received support from 25 Republican Latino leaders. Ybarra on the other hand stands by his own bigotry:

As far as I am concerned, she is a third level bureaucrat who was given a job by Bush so she could say that he had Mexicans working for him, and she’s running for Senate so Bush can target Latino voters.

This coming from a regional coordinator of Latinos for Dean!!! Their website says “We are a completely grassroots group composed of volunteers. We are Latinos, friends of Latinos, Spanish speakers and Dean supporters who want to make a difference in our communities.” Apparently, Ybarra believes Latinos can’t genuinely be conservative, Republican, or a supporter of Bush. It seems as though strong convictions are not as important as what Ybarra feels should be blind ethnic political loyalty.

This is a bigotry that must not be tolerated. You can contact Steven Ybarra, expressing your disapproval of his racist comments and demanding a public apology.

You may also want to contact Latinos For Dean National Coordinator Lorenzo Lebrija,
and/or the Dean Campaign and request action be taken against Ybarra.

    Double standards reign for Democrats.

Trent Lott makes pretty innocent comments last year and the media made an event out of it.

Hillary Clinton makes an assinine “joke” recently but no one is asking for herhead.

I pray for the day that minorities and minority advocate organizations wake up and realize what the standards of the Democratic party are: dependency, hatred and bitterness, mean spiritedness, trickery and deceit, name calling, bickering, greed and envy. The polarization of the Democratic party is absolutely astonishing. The level to which they have sunk is sad. There is no honor, there is nothing to be proud of anymore.

John Locke believed that righeous laws enacted to a state’s Constitution would serve to keep a nation intact, spiritually and politically, no matter what quality of man served in public office. Maybe that was possible almost 350 years ago when Locke helped to draft the Constitution of Carolina. We have seen such a plummeting of morals and integrity in US politics that this idea seems no longer viable.

William Penn, who formed the government of Pennsylvania, understood that it is the quality of men and women in public office that kept a city, a state and, ultimately, a nation great when he said,

“Governments, like clocks, go from the motion men give them… Wherefore governments, rather depend upon men, than men upon governments. Let men be good, and the government cannot be bad… But if men be bad, the government can never be good.”

This kind of verbal backstabbing has got to go. Civility is all but gone from our classrooms, our courtrooms and our boardrooms. When will we learn?

To steal Mike the Moron’s thunder, his “link” consists of a turn of the century german postcard depicting five people eating watermelon with a racist slogan printed in the corner. What this has to do with political discourse is a mystery. This idiot has posted this link on various other blogs in a feeble attempt to be “clever”.

The KKK has been mainly run by Southern Democrats (learn your history). Black people owned black slaves during, after and before the civil war (again learn your history). By the way, Democrat Senator Robert Byrd was a high member in the KKK. If your main purpose in life is racism, you are probably a racist! La Raza means the race:Mexican (to take over California and America. I am an American with roots from Spain and Ireland. Mexicans are of both Spanish ancestry and American Indian ancestry. When we look how we can make our country better, race should not be considered. We are all Americans and blessed by God to live in this great country. God bless all, even the ignorant among us!
