Slaves to Political Correctness?

By Matt Margolis | November 28, 2003

Sometimes, I read things that are just so damn stupid, I either have to bang my head against a wall, or blog about it.

I’ll take the latter option for now.

Los Angeles officials have asked that manufacturers, suppliers and contractors stop using the terms “master” and “slave” on computer equipment, saying such terms are unacceptable and offensive.

The request — which has some suppliers furious and others busy re-labeling components — came after an unidentified worker spotted a videotape machine carrying devices labeled “master” and “slave” and filed a discrimination complaint with the county’s Office of Affirmative Action Compliance.

Could this be any more pathetic? Oh no, it says “master” and “slave” on it.

Big f***ing deal!

Discrimination? Against who? Against what? This is how things have been for years! I’ve been inside a few computers in my time, and I know about the whole “master” and “slave” thing. I never thought anything of it.

Because I don’t care. No one should care.

“Based on the cultural diversity and sensitivity of Los Angeles County, this is not an acceptable identification label,” Joe Sandoval, division manager of purchasing and contract services, said in a memo sent to County vendors.

Not acceptable? Then don’t buy the equipment for crying out loud. Should manufacturers re-label their components because of some oversensitive money hungry loser decides to be offended to make a few bucks?

Whats next? GLBT groups filing a discriminaton suit to change the name of male and female cables because it oppresses homosexuals?
Should Apple Computers be sued because the Home Directory in Finder might offend the homeless? Or for having “Trash” and not a “Recycle Bin” like Microsoft Windows.. should environmentalists be up in arms about that? Should Dell be sued for having black computers? Does that offend anyone? Should I stop calling it a mouse because PETA thinks it’s offensive to mice to name a a peripheral after them? Should Linux no longer be able use the Penguin as its icon? Is that exploiting the animal?

I’d like to believe that the aformentoined hypotheticals are too farfetched to be reality…but today, people become either too oversenstive, money-hungry, or just completely nuts… We are bound to always be slaves to political correctness - that is, if people keep treating the so-called oppressed victims as the masters whose ridiculous orders we have to follow.

The solution I posted on my blog was for the equipment maker to file a counter complaint saying that they were descriminating against people who live a BDSM “alternative lifestyle”, and then re-lable the drives “Mistress and whipping-boy”. I wouldn’t laugh too hard about the male/female connection thing either, I’m sure the moonbats will put that forth next.

It’s sooooooooooooooooo refreshing to have sound, progressive rulings in California despite the Nazi putsch that has overtaken the once great state!

There is no doubt in my mind now that “H” is just someone playing around.

Matt, “H” is a insipid little troll who cruises blogs and squeezes out excrement in the comments section. It’s usually cut and paste jobs but fortunately they are short as he does not have the attention span to “grunt” out more than a few sentences out of his backside. He also goes by the handles “JeezLouise” and “Bob”.

Next we’ll see complaints that “motherboards” discriminate against women. Or men. Hard to say.

Should motherboards be called “partnerboards” or “lifepartner-boards”?
