Doing The Lord’s Work

By Matt Margolis | November 2, 2003

Last night, myself, and a few others of the local chapter of Free Republic held a counter protest to a rally organized by One Palestine. One Palestine was in Boston to protest a conference held by an organization called Brit Tzedek V’Shalom, an organization which basically believes that the Jews of Israel can peacefully co-exist with the Arabs as long as both sides make various concessions. Personally, I don’t believe their goal is realistic, for the Arabs have shown nothing but pure hatred for the Jewish people and only wish to destroy Israel.

Holding signs and having fun.

That aside, we had a small group with us. Several people on our side could not make it. However, we had about five people, and the pro-Palis had between 30 and 40 people. They were on one side of the street, we were on the other, at the entrance to the Park Plaza hotel.

Their messages were contradictory and inflammatory. They called Israel a “Terror State,” they were calling for an end to “racism and genocide” amongst other things.

Aaron with his ever-so-popular “Suck My Intifada” sign.

This is very interesting, because not one of them was holding a sign condemning suicide homicide bombings. They had a few chants, and we’d usually counter their chants with our own. They would shout “Palestine will never die!” and we’d say “Palestine was never alive!” or they’d say, “Zionism is racism!” to which we replied, “Intifadah is terrorism!” They had a bunch of different slogans, and I’d come up with different things on the fly to respond with, “Palestine is a terror state!” “Bombing buses is not peace!” “Stop the bombings then we’ll talk!” “Am Yisrael Chai”

All in all, I think we did a good a job standing up to them. They appeared very irritated at our presence, and I think they got really annoyed that our chants were interrupting theirs and they certainly appeared dumbfounded at times on how to respond to various things we said.

Me wearing Tyler’s President Bush mask.

You can imagine the reactions we got.

We experienced a lot of different reactions from passersby. One man came up next to me said, “I can’t believe those people across the street, I’m glad you guys are out here, you’re doing the Lord’s work.”

At one point, we saw the pro-Palis chasing after someone surrounded by security, me, my brother, and another Freeper chased after them to see what was going on, we were told it was Congressman Barney Frank, who the pro-Palis had been shouting about a couple times back by the hotel. They assaulted him with questions, and he did his best to have a reasonable conversation with him, but after they kept flooding him from all directions with remarks and accusations he refused to continue and left with his security. After this incident we had some face-to-face confrontations with the pro-Palis, which almost seemed ready to violent. Ignorant of the history of Eretz Yisrael, they were unwilling to listen to what we had to say, calling us racists and counter productive. The sign I was carrying had pictures of suicide bombings and I asked them “Do you call this peace? Why don’t you condemn this?” A couple of girls, who I believe were organizers of their protest said, “Yes, I support suicide bombings if that’s what it takes.”

Tyler (wearing the mask) and myself.

These pro-Palis were clearly inhuman parasites. I couldn’t believe my ears. I shouted some nasty things at them, and made my way back across the street.

Occasionally someone from their side would come over and they’d engage us in an argument… while they were perfectly willing to spread their hateful lies, they were unwilling to listen to us. They kept shouting, ignoring the facts we had…I once again asked them to condemn the homicide bombings, and they wouldn’t – they actually said they agreed with them.

The whole affair lasted a bit over 4 hours. For a group of our size, we gave them a decent fight and as their numbers dwindled, we remained strong. After it was over, the five of us went to cheers for dinner and some brew. It was a great time.

Hanging at Cheers after the protest.

Check out my brother Aaron’s description of the protest at his blog.
And Tyler (BostonianRightist) has a FReport about the event also.

I did not think you would end up as an apologist for a leaderless party or a tool of an ideology at the expense of your better self. Just because there are horrible, genocidal, racist Palestinians, you can’t tar all of them with the same brush. Yes, there are the suicide bombers, and much of what Israel is doing can be justified as an attempt to fight back against them.

But when you say “the Arabs have shown nothing but pure hatred for the Jewish people and only wish to destroy Israel,” you are guilty of the exact same racism and blindness you acuse the protestors of.

Repeat after me: Suicide bombers do not represent the Palestinians. Right-wing paramilitary groups which kill Palestinian children do not represent the Israelis.

  15. Emmett Says:
    November 6th, 2003 at 11:28 am

Oh, and sorry for calling you a racist. I don’t think you are. But that statement is racist, in that it stereotypes an entire race (the Arabs) by the actions of a few.
It could even be true, and it would still be technically racist.

    Definition from dictionary.com:
    Racism:
The belief that race accounts for differences in human character

Quite frankly, yes. How can you not?

So Emmett, when black actors, comedians, politicians, atheletes, etc. publicly and openly ridicule whites and other races, do you call them racist, or just the actions racist? Or do you toe the party line and believe that only whites can be racist?

Frank…get back to work, you got earnin’ to do.

  22. Emmett Says:
    November 7th, 2003 at 3:34 pm

(changed my email address because I just realized spam-bots are going to spider this page and cull my address)

Of course they’re racists. If they make racist jokes, then they’re racists.

That said, it doesn’t follow that we must never consider race in public (or private) policy. We just can’t consider race to have anything to do with the inherent capabilities of a person of that race.

If they say, “We need affirmative action to combat historic racism” I say, you’re wrong, but I don’t call them racist. Recoginition of historical (and current) disparities is allowed, although I believe it is counter productive. What’s racist is implying that those disparities are a result of something inherent in the races.

I hope that clarifies my position.

    Oops. Posted a bit early.

Re: Matt, I didn’t say you shouldn’t be anti-terrorist. I said you shouldn’t imply that, and I quote again,

“the Arabs have shown nothing but pure hatred for the Jewish people and only wish to destroy Israel”

That is clearly a racist slur on the Arab people. Most Arabs are good people, just like most people from all over the world. There’s nothing inherent to being Arab that lets you know anything about a person.
There are also horrible, evil Arabs, who DO want nothing more than to destroy Israel and hate the Jewish people. They do not stand for all Arabs, and it is *wrong* to imply they do.

    Inferior people.

If you can point out the ones who read and accept as truth when the Egyptian papers call us the great evil in the world then I will hate just those.

But until you can point those out I will tend to hate them all.
    ———————————
My point: Why is their race the deciding factor for you? How can you possibly hate them all for simply sharing such an arbitrary characteristic with evil people? Do you hate Germans because there were Nazis? Do you hate Americans because we committed genocide against Native Americans? You cannot judge an entire people on the actions of a few evil ones, and to do so is the worst racism.

Re: Redneck, that’s just pathetic. It’s not even worthy of a response.

  27. cannon Says:
    November 11th, 2003 at 1:03 am

No, I hated the 30s era Germans and I hate the apologists who say “Well the average German didn’t know what was going on.” That stinks of fecal material. I look down upon the people of California during the gold rush who would shoot down “Chinks” because the only good chink was a dead chink. (Ditto attitudes toward Native Americans during that time frame.)

I despise them all. The difference dear emmett is I denouce them. Where the hell are the “moderate arabs” who are denouncing terrorism? Hmmm? Instead we get Prime Ministers who claim, “Ah but it’s the jooooos! Those evil rat bastards. They are the puppet masters.”

Emmett until there are people in that side of the world who say they are feed up with terrorism and take concrete actions to curb it they can all go to hell. If no one stands up against it then they all are complicit.

  28. Emmett Says:
    November 11th, 2003 at 3:53 pm

Clearly you haven’t educated yourself on the true situation. As much as there are evil people who love death, there are Arabs who are doing what they can to curb it. Their capabilities are limited, especially since the evil ones are by and large in charge of the governments.

    A small example:
    http://traubman.igc.org/dg-tlart.htm
A bigger example, from a source I think you’d trust:
    http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,71336,00.html
Another example, from the President himself:
    http://usinfo.state.gov/regional/nea/summit/text2003/0430bushroadmap1.htm

There are more, but you clearly have the same capability to find them I have. Instead, you choose to demonize a whole race for the actions of a few. And that is both dangerous and shameful.

  29. Radical Redneck Says:
    November 11th, 2003 at 4:56 pm

“Naturally the common people don’t want war, but after all it is the leaders who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in every country.”

  42. cannon Says:
    November 18th, 2003 at 1:45 am

Emmett, you are right. I am wrong. After all many Muslims/Arabs are doing what they can to curb violence. Just like this family featured via opinionjournal Palestinian Family Values

Rofayda Qaoud–raped by her brothers and impregnated - refused to commit suicide, her mother recalls, even after she bought the unwed teenager a razor with which to slit her wrists. So Amira Abu Hanhan Qaoud says she did what she believes any good Palestinian parent would: restored her family’s “honor” through murder.

Yup, the religion of peace. “What any good parent would do.” Sounds like they think this is an obvious (obvious) solution. “Your daughter is raped, kill her. Obviously she was asking for it. Those damn females are wiley creatures, tempting poor menfolk. Allah Akbar!!!”

Ok Emmett you have linked to the “moderate” voices up above. Fine. There are some voices of reason out there. But until more people start thinking the moderate way is the common way instead of murdering their own flesh and blood because their other flesh and blood decided that rape was ok, they can all rot in hell. FETE.

  43. cannon Says:
    November 18th, 2003 at 1:50 am

Oh and h here is a comment back at you. END SOCIETIES WHO BELIEVE “HONOR KILLING” IS OK. END SOCIETIES WHO BELIEVE FMG IS JUST A WAY OF PROTECTING THE VIRTUE OF WOMYN!!!

Maybe your version of the spelling of women might actually reach through that empty cave you call your skull. h you are supporting abhorrent societies who treat your gender with contempt. Oh I am sorry, I guess it’s ok because it is only Muslim women, right?

  44. Emmett Says:
    November 18th, 2003 at 5:14 pm

I agree, all the suicide bombers and honor killers can rot in hell.
But now we’re only comdemning those who do bad acts, not those whose only crime is sharing a race with evil men (and women! Let’s be equal opportunity!) - just like I said in the first place.

  45. cannon Says:
    November 19th, 2003 at 3:14 am

No I am condeming a “common perception” that honor killings or FGM are good. They protect the virtue of our families and our women property don’tcha know. Allah Akbar!

The mother felt she had to murder her daughter because she felt the rest of society would hurt the family. Why? Because those societies say that it was the woman’s fault. I blame the whole damn society.

After all if it wasn’t a common perception that society would shun the given family then things such as honor murders wouldn’t be needed now would they? Or are you of the opinion that anyone who engages in honor murder just comes up with such ideas on their own? That there is no societal conditioning causing this. (After all we all know that it is common for parents to murder their offsprings…)

  46. Emmett Says:
    November 20th, 2003 at 1:50 pm

I agree with you that societies which promote honor killing clearly are a few bananas short of a bunch. But now you’re changing the grounds of the argument.
We were talking about hating all the arabs (individually) because they support terrorists and want to kill all the Jews in Israel and attack America.
Now we’re talking about hating the evil aspects of modern arab society, whcih clearly calls only for reform of the society, not ending it - since that’s impossible unless you’re suggesting we kill them all, which I don’t think you are.
But I’ll run with the new argument too:
To be fair we would have had to applied the same “end the society” standard to America, back when we all owned slaves (and you don’t get off for being a northerner - New York was built by slaves too). But would ending American society been a good thing?

  47. Emmett Says:
    November 20th, 2003 at 1:51 pm

More specifically, what would you have thought if the French and British had invaded America to end our evil, slave-owning ways?

  48. Matt Margolis Says:
    November 20th, 2003 at 2:24 pm

Emmett, I have a right to hate those Arabs who kill Jews, and/or support others who do so.

Second, your mew “argument” is ridiculous.

A little history for ya. We essentially inherited the institution of slavery from the British while we were colonies. We also led the world in abolishing slavery.

If you want to make a fuss over slavery, do something about the slavery that still exists today in Africa, and stop whining about American slavery that ended over 150 years ago.

  49. cannon Says:
    November 21st, 2003 at 1:57 am

No Emmett I am not changing the boundaries. Look I will say this slowly so maybe you will catch a clue. People make up a society. If a society is FUBAR it is because the people of that society are FUBAR. Likewise if people are FUBAR then their society will be FUBAR. Emmett how can you condemn the actions of a society without condemning the actions of the people of that society?

“Well the state has the evil, evil guns… Thus the state holds the power to act.”

And who holds the guns? The people of that society. (Unless of course you believe that guns kill all by themselves.) The various members of society are the actors for that society.

Now your thoughts on the Civil War would be valid if there was not a large section of abolitionist back then. Ever hear of a thing called The Underground Railroad? People taking direct steps working toward a goal of correcting injustice.

Where is the Muslim Railroad spiriting women off to safety? (Oh that right, silly me, there isn’t one.)

Oh oh oh.. Do I get off if my family came to the US after the Civil War? (*shrug* I don’t know if they did…) Would that change my culpability? After all your approval is just so important to me…

“But Cannon, everything was built upon the backs of those poor slaves.”

I am sure the Irish and Chinese workers on the transcontinental railroad would agree… Or the women who died in the Triangle Sweatshop Factory Fire… or any of the other immigrants who have helped build this country.
