So NOW what? Nothing.

By Matt Margolis | August 27, 2003

Gee, and I was beginning to worry about Carol Moseley Braun’s candidacy. The token black woman candidate of the Democratic Party, who’s lackluster candidacy has been laughable since Day 1, has been endorsed by two women’s organizations, the National Organization for Women, and the National Women’s Political Caucus.

No shit? Who would have thought that two women’s organizations would endorse the woman candidate – even though she stands as much chance of winning the nomination as I stand the chance of voting for her.

Braun, considered a long shot for the nomination, has been conducting an exploratory presidential campaign, traveling, raising money and participating in debates while trying to decide whether to stay in the race.

A long shot? Try a “doesn’t stand a chance.”

The former Illinois senator and ambassador to New Zealand raised under $250,000 in the first half of the year — less than any of the eight other candidates seeking the party’s nomination. Still, she said she has been encouraged by the response from people she’s met on her travels.

I’m sure she can remember all their names and faces – because there probably wasn’t that many of them.

“Nothing was more significant than having the support of the National Organization for Women and the National Women’s Political Caucus ,” said Braun, the only woman in the race. “And I hope and I know, I feel confident, that other women’s organizations will come on board based on the leadership of these two very important, significant national grass-roots organizations.”

Ignoring the fact that she stands no chance in the race, does she really think it is going to be an effective to run using her gender as a device in her campaign? Any minority candidate will have a tough time winning an election using their minority status as a means of mustering support. Moseley Braun, or any woman candidate, could never win on women’s issues alone. A black candidate could never win running on a campaign focused solely or primarily on minority issues.

The caucus only endorses pro-choice women candidates, and leaders said they were excited to finally have a presidential candidate they could endorse. NOW/PAC Chairwoman Kim Gandy said the group considered all nine presidential hopefuls, but Braun had the longest record of supporting feminist ideals.

This is why these endorsements mean nothing. These are essentially single-issue organizations. This is not going to win Moseley Braun much support, especially since women are more and more pro-life.

Why do these women’s organizations think that the only woman’s issue is abortion? Has the woman’s movement done so poorly over the years that the only issue these ideological women think they can unite their gender with is abortion? While America shifts to the right, these liberal organizations think they can take America hostage again by steering further to the left.

These endorsements won’t do anything for the Moseley Braun campaign. Her role is simply to neutralize the Al Sharpton campaign and nothing more.
