I Don’t Care About Kobe Bryant

By Matt Margolis | July 18, 2003

That’s right, I don’t. Who cares? Who is he? I couldn’t even tell you what team he plays for. I know he plays basketball. I know what he’s been accused of.

But is there any reason why I need to hear so much about this damn story.

I have no judgment on his guilt or innocence at this point. Honestly, it’s just as easy for a woman to falsely accuse a man of rape, as is it for a man to deny a rape he actually committed.

So I jump to no conclusions on this case. I can see the alleged victim’s potential motives for falsely accusing Kobe Bryant. So with that in mind, I honestly am driven to give Bryant the benefit of the doubt.

However, he has admitted to consensual sex with this woman who has made these accusations. This makes him an adulterer. So, in that respect, he is still a scumbag.

However, that doesn’t mean he committed rape.

So, whatever… What happens, happens. I don’t intend to follow this case because I don’t find this any more important than if it were some obscure individual. I’m not going to get sucked into the frenzy of fascination of celebrities’ legal troubles.

We’re going to have to deal with this story as a news filler for a while now. Lawyer statements… breaking news… victim character assassination… all that crap which makes for a good reason to change the channel.

If this story could just fade away quietly until a verdict comes in, that would be nice.

But, the media frenzy has already begun.

exactly. how about letting the justice system handle this one without media interference. Innocent until proven guilty. Don’t drag the accuser or the accused through the mud for ratings. Just let the damn courts do their job!

True… he is a scum bag. And certainly it’s just as easy for Him to den rape as it is for er to claim it. It’s also conceivable that this woman is hoping for a nice settlement. i’d be willing to bet that if a settlement happened, it would mean that A) she was in it for the $, and either he is guilty, or just wants it over with, but will inevitable be portrayed as being guilty because he settled.
If she is offered a settlement, and refuses it, and wants the trial, she may be telling the truth. Double edged sword going on here. I would say that based on his press conference, that he’s either truly sincere and he is innocent, or just a really good actor.

Tough call on this. One undeniable fact… he’s a stupid idiot, and a scum bag. Anyone in a similar position of public stardom ought to know that whatever you do, someone is watching, or someone wants to take your money, or lemish your record, or whatever. I mean, come on??? Did he really think he could get away with beefing another woman and no one would find out????

His wife better divorce his ass. If she doesn’t, she’s either stupid as he is, or she’s in it for the money as well.

Thus far, it is clear, his endorsements could be u the window, innocent or not, his basketball career…. unsure…. lots of things are unsure.

Java- this is a criminal not a civil case. She can’t get a settlement. Even if she didn’t want to press charges at this point, he would still be prosecuted. The fact is, that DAs won’t go through with a case unless they are pretty certain they will win. Even more so when its a famous cat. But he’s innocent until proven guilty, so we shouldn’t rush to judgment.

Actually Trevor, a lawyer is likely to pursue a case like this regardless for the exposure alone. A case like this is a career booster - regardless of the verdict.

i wouldn’t rule an “under-the-table” settlement… “Here’s 4million buycks, now drop the case and shut up!” you never know… I’m ot all that familar with these types of cases and how they work, etc. etc., frankly, i just don’t care.

It may be a criminal case now, but if you remember your “Pervs And The Law” you will remember that it didn’t take that much money to buy off the family of Michael Jackson’s accuser. For any amount of money, people can be convinced to drop even legitimate charges. Sadly, this only enables the perp to act out again.

He went straight from hike skuhl to the pros and into full media attention and had to grow up to fast. Mistakes happen, especially when your living in LA with millions upon millions of dollars in endorsements and contracts. I think his career is over; his endorsements without a doubt are. I am from Wisconsin and a Packer fan, this same exact thing happened to the Packers tight-end (From Boston College) Mark Chmura. He was accused of rape by a high schooler, he admitted to buying them alcohol and sitting in a hot tub at a post prom party. He was found innocent but his career is now over. He was released from the Packers during this whole ordeal and later was offered a contract by the Raiders but declined. If he were to play I think the initial claim would’ve followed him anywhere. When your in that position, whether it’s true or not, you’re SOL.

Kobe Bryant has a lot more to lose than his accuser does. I think she shouldn’t be anonymous.

in the words of Michale Savage, she is Rocky Mountain (white) Trash. What’s she got to lose? Nothing. If this turns out to be a false accusation, and Kobe wants to sue her, what can he get? a pack of marlboros and a ripped t-shirt?

I can’t say of course if he’s guilty or not. He sure has the mannerisms of a person who is guilty… that is to say, during his press conference, he sure LOOKED guilty.

And yes, if his wife stays with him she’s an idiot and probably only with him for the money. Do you think he cares?

As I’ve said before, I am in no position to make any judgement regarding his guilt or innocence. I am not going to attempt to analyze his behavior and claim to know the answer. I think it is just as possible that he raped her as much as it is possible she is lying about it. So I’m going to let the evidence and courts make that decision.
