Boston Globe: Republicans Cant Be Heroes.
July 10th, 2003
This Mitt Romney story keeps getting more and more interesting.
As you know from my previous post That Pesky Little ‘R’ Is Nowhere To Be Found upon the release of the story that Mitt Romney and two of his sons rescued a family whos boat had sunk in NH, Romneys political affiliation was conveniently left out of the story.
Now, the really interesting stuff has been happening with the local papers.
Here in Massachusetts, if you know anything about anything, you already know Mitt is a Republican that is not the issue. The issue today, that I felt necessary to call to your attention, is how local Democrats and The Boston Globe have been treating this story.
Romney has been criticized for being on vacation. Oh yeah, how dare he?
One story from a local paper talks about what some of the Democrats have been saying:
“There are lots of people drowning in the commonwealth right now who would certainly welcome a rescue,” said Rep. Jay R. Kaufman (D-Lexington).
Oh grow up you moron. What a way to belittle a good deed and spin your own little partisan drivel out of it. Shut your mouth and vote yourself another pay raise why dont you?
“Mitt Romney only chooses to run for office from Massachusetts — he doesn’t vacation here,” said Democratic Party spokeswoman Jane Lane.
Oh no, Romney doesnt vacation in Massachusetts?!?!?! What the fuck is this whining about? Is that all that this dumb bitch can say? Thats right, dumb bitch. Thats what she is. The Massachusetts Democrats have gone from questioning Mitts Massachusetts residency during the gubernatorial election to criticizing the fact he takes a vacation in New Hampshire?
At least one Democrat was above partisanship and commended Romney:
Rep. Eric T. Turkington (D-Falmouth) said he was proud to have a governor who could and would leap into action in a crisis.
“When somebody’s drowning, we’re not Democrats or Republicans,” Turkington said. “I’m impressed that we have a governor who can do that kind of thing.”
Thats what they all should be saying, instead of that ridiculous crap Kaufman and Lane were spewing.
And then there’s the Boston Globe today.
Scot Lehigh wrote the most despicable piece that is utterly condescending of Romneys rescue.
Properly speaking, however, Mitt is not a hero at all but rather a Good Samaritan. Granted, in the loose and liberal definition of modern laurels, the notion of heroism has largely lost its meaning. Thus it is that a precocious tot who dials 911 to secure help for a stricken family member now qualifies as a hero, as does the plucky pooch whose insistent barking alerts a sleeping family to a fire smoldering in the basement.
Leave it to an editorial in the Globe to outright say the Romneys arent heroes. Can you believe that? While most people consider this a remarkable story, this nimrod goes into a spiel about how Romney is not a hero. God forbid a Republican get credit for a selfless act.
True heroism, however, comes only at the very real risk of physical harm to the rescuer. Which is why the stories of actual heroes impress themselves indelibly on our imagination.
This isnt necessarily true. Although the word may be used rather liberally (except by liberals, coincidentally) I think Romneys actions certainly qualify. Saving a life, rescuing people in danger is a heroic act.
Certainly the governor deserves a heartfelt thank you from those he rescued. And kudos for being a good citizen. But a hero’s treatment? Please.
If I subscribed to the Boston Globe, Id have had to use this editorial piece for toilet paper. What garbage. Its one thing for Romney to be modest and suggest that his actions were not that of hero, The difference between him saying it and numbnuts like Lehigh writing his own piece of crap in the Globe, is that Romney is doing so out of modesty, Lehigh and the other critical liberals in Taxachusetts are trying to prevent Romney from experiencing a popularity boost from this incident because of partisan politics.
To be sure, at his Monday media availability, Romney disclaimed the title of hero. ”Oh, no, we were just in the right place at the right time,” he said. Added son Josh: ”We did nothing anyone else wouldn’t have done in the same place.”
Nothing except hold a press conference, that is.
What Lehigh doesnt seem to understand is that Mitt Romney is the Governor of Massachusetts, and because of this fact, the story is of major interest to the media. What else would you expect to happen? Is Romney supposed to cover his face from the cameras and say No comment, as if hed done something wrong?
The media came to Romney. Romney didnt come to the media.
Lehigh in his piece also make comparisons between Romneys alleged heroism, and the heroism of John F. Kennedy in WWII for his efforts to rescue the crew of his PT boat. Somehow suggesting that while JFK showed a heros modesty, Romney hasnt
The moral of the story is this: While Democrats can be Supermen, Republicans cant be heroes. In the same state that repeatedly reelects a Senator who once drowned a girl (We know him as the WWII hero JFKs brother Ted Kennedy), a Republican governor who helps rescue a family from potentially drowning becomes the target of the media and is political adversaries.

Well, in the higher scheme of things, I guess the Reps are too busy vacationing and not bothering with more pressing needs of whatever, in order to become heroes. Throw him into the Democratic Underground, where he will belongs.

What childish, moronic comments. Ahh leave it to the Dems.

A. Everyone deserves to take a vacation with their family. Even the governer of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Maybe the Dems could learn a lesson, lighten up and learn to love their families instead of the government.
2. Nobody who lives in Massachusetts vacations in Masachusetts. Sit on any overpass going over I-93 in New Hampshire on a Sunday night… about 95% of those cars have Massachusetts plates. Face it. New Hampshire is a superior place to vacation, despite the fact we wish you’d spend your money and leave.

Honestly, no one cares where anyone vacations. He could go to Djiboudi for all I care. The fact of the matter is the Demeocrats just have to find something to cry about. “What?! he was on vacation? Ha! We caught you not working. And what is this? You were not in Mass? Bring on the guillotine.”
The BJ and the Hildebeast (sorry, I had to steal that) didn’t work for 8 years. Where were they on that one?
July 10th, 2003 at 1:34 pm
no one seemed to care that Hitlery didn’t live in NY state when she was able to run, and won her seat as Senator. She just owned a house there (that poor town of Chappaqua), she dind’t LIVE there. She should have run for senator in Arkansas, where she is from, not NY, where there was a seat up for grabs. No one shit their pants about that….
Romney get’s criticized for vacationing in NH??? How many democrats vacation out of their home state? How many senators and representatives do you think only vacation in their home state?? I bet you many take out of state, and out of country vacations as well.
With all the hard work Romney has done, dealing with democrat pigs like the ones Matt quoted, he deserves a vacation, just like EVERYONE else.. Even US presidents take vacations. We should be glad they do. You don’t want such high powered people to get burned out. Those sick demented morons should grow up. If Romney isn’t allowed to take a vacation (whereever he wants, as we live in a free society) than we should expect the Democrats to decline any vacation time they “earn” because apparently no one is entitled to vacation.

Thunder Thighs running in Arkansas? Hahah. Yeah right. They’d never claim either of the Clintons.
July 10th, 2003 at 11:03 pm
You know you have hit the bottom when Arkansas won’t claim you.
July 11th, 2003 at 12:24 am
Remember, this is the Globe that’s being discussed. Not the paradigm for accurate/balanced reporting.
July 11th, 2003 at 2:35 am
Doc… Hahah! That made my night.
July 11th, 2003 at 12:11 pm
Arkansas not claiming you is probably a badge of honor.
July 11th, 2003 at 2:39 pm
Hey Courtney, here is Louisiana, many of us feel that the people in Arkansas worked as hard as they could to get Klintoon elected President so the pair of them would leave. I think all of the investigations of Bj and the Hildebeast back in Arkansas were none too subtle hints that the Klintoons would not be welcomed back. Besides Hildebeast went to Arkansas because it was the only place she passed the bar.
July 11th, 2003 at 2:52 pm
She’s passed more candy bars than bar exams. look at her fat thighs.
July 11th, 2003 at 7:22 pm
As for the comment in your post that he was merely a good Samaritan, not a hero, wouldn’t a search for how the word “hero” was used in the Globule be interesting? Just how many little old partisan ladies handing out slices of day-old Wonder Bread at some soup kitchen are heroes? Or how many cry-baby teens wearing anti-war t-shirts and being criticized were heroes?
That just might be an iteresting exercise, Matt… Something to consider.

question: who restricts their vacation to an area of 8257 sq. miles? (area of Mass.) That’s only about 5 counties in Texas. When I go on a vacation, I would like to actually go somewhere. That’s one reason they call it going on vacation….. you go somewhere.

btw, courtney,
I only attended UT Arlington for Russian I-IV, and was not involved in any other aspect of the university. The area is nice. I really like Dallas, and the Mrs. and I intend to move back there as soon as the opportunity arises.

I’ll keep that in mind. Thanks.

Boston Globe on heroism
Matt Margolis has been reading the Boston Globe, and he doesn’t like what he’s read. Republicans Can’t Be Heroes is the conclusion he draws from an idiotic, mindless piece of claptrap from Scot Lehigh. He also takes two Democratic lawmakers…
September 12th, 2006 at 2:21 pm
[…] In an opinion article some republicans decried as partisan sour grapes, the Boston Globe’s Scott Leigh wrote that he did not think the Romney’s actions amounted to “heroism” (the original article is now behind the Globe Website’s pay wall, but you can see the article quoted extensively here).
