Oh, The Things We’ve Found

By Matt Margolis | June 25, 2003

MSNBC has reported that equipment for nuclear weapons has been found in Iraq.

WASHINGTON, June 25 — U.S. investigators in Iraq have found equipment for a nuclear weapons program and millions of detailed documents relating to chemical and biological weapons, U.S. officials told NBC News on Wednesday.

There it is.

U.S. Officials did say that the discoveries were not exactly a smoking gun…. however, they said that the materials “were compelling proof that Saddam was trying actively to acquire such weapons in defiance of the United Nations.”

This is prety big isn’t? I think so.

One of the documents, from 2001, was titled “Document burial and U.N. activities in Iraq,” the sources said. It gave detailed instructions on how to hide materials and deceive U.N. weapons inspectors, the sources said.

2001. Very interesting don’t you think?

I need not quote the entire article, but jeez, I tell you, this is quite a find. This could be the beginning of some very exciting occurances in Iraq.

Even CNN reports a similiar story.

U.S. officials emphasized this was not evidence Iraq had a nuclear weapon — but it was evidence the Iraqis concealed plans to reconstitute their nuclear program as soon as the world was no longer looking.

That’s pretty big. I’m sure this is only the beginning.

The materials were unearthed by Iraqi scientist Madhi Obeidi, who hid the evidence in his backyard.

Obeidi told CNN the parts of a gas centrifuge system for enriching uranium were part of a highly sophisticated system he was ordered to hide to be ready to rebuild the bomb program.

I am very confident, extraordinarily confident, this will lead to a lot more compelling information regarding Iraq’s WMDs programs.

He also said other Iraqi scientists were watching to see if he was safe after he cooperated with the U.S. government.

Now that he is safe, Obeidi said he believes other scientists would come forward with other components of Iraq’s weapons program.

The days and weeks ahead will prove to be very interesting. I’d pay attention to what’s going on carefully.

All things considered, I feel this is huge. I do. I really have to wonder what liberals are thinking…

“They said it’s no smoking gun.”
“If it took this long to find it, was Saddam really a threat?”
“Can you really believe this Iraqi scientist?”
“Why didn’t we hear about this sooner?”
“I’ll believe it when I see the missing SCUDs and other weapons.”
“Well, so what? It doesn’t mean Saddam was a real threat.”

They’re already thinking about ways to deal with this new information… “My God! What if Iraq really had WMDs, or was planning to build them up again? What are we going to bash Bush about? How are we going to get back into the White House in 2004 if Bush was right all along???”

That’s what they’re thinking right now.

But don’t bother asking them - they’re going to keep it to themselves.

Same article, first line :U.S. OFFICIALS said the discoveries were not proof that Iraq had managed to build or obtain banned weapons of mass destruction, as President Bush asserted before the U.S. invasion of Iraq in March.

No proof means no proof, unless you want to argue about what the definition of “proof” is…

    Take a seat, Jack.

Let me see… We find these few parts in this rose garden, and since they are not a complete system, they are not a smoking gun. We find a few more parts in the yard down the road, but since they alone do not make a system, they too are not a smoking gun. We find documents which spell out the intent of the government to restart the nuclear program, but this is not a smoking gun.

Isn’t that rather like saying that because your bicycle came in three separate boxes, and the instructions in an envelope, that you have no bicycle?
