Kerry & Edwards: Duck and Run
By Matt Margolis | March 15, 2003
Senators Kerry and Edwards were not present for the recent vote in the Senate on banning partial birth abortions. It’s no coincidence that these two Democrats are both seeking the Democratic Nomination for President to run against George W. Bush in the next election. This is a real act of cowardice.
Their ducking out of the vote can be a sign of one of only two things: 1) Neither have the moral clarity to vote for the bill, or 2) neither have the “party loyalty” to vote against it. For Kerry and Edwards, it wasn’t worth the risk to have either of those circumstances on their record. This speaks volumes about the capacities of these two candidates to vote for what they think is right vs. what they think will receive praise from their party or the public.
If a presidential hopeful doesn’t have the fortitude to vote with his conscience, even if it goes against his party’s platform, how can he be trusted to do “the right thing” as President of the United States?
