  1. Right now foxwoods resort casino is fighting the uaw from getting in.I think this is a worthy fight.I work there now.Of course we all want more. But a union will hurt more than help.I ask people why union?.Most just think that its a fix -all.I havent heard one good thing that getting them in here would do.I feel that they want to get in a get some $$ from the workers.Sure the casino makes alot of money, but all in all they are fair to the workers. Most of the union lovers are people who have never really did any hard labor.I say get them outside, digging a ditch, of anything something,.Then lets see how tough it is working in a.c. all summer, and heat all winter.there a soft.figh the uaw.All they want is your union fees.

I’m working on a job in center city philadelphia. A small job at that for a customer I know and have worked with before. We are there for our customers when we are needed at 3am for an emergency fix. Our customer is a restauranteur by the way. Somehow Union guys found out we were working there and have been hassling us for days. the restaurant cannnot be closed long because of loss of business and other reasons. These lazy idiots are standing around hassling us for a a job that they couldn’t even imagine completing in the time frame we are given. These morons would be having coffee breaks , long lunch breaks .. and over all.. end up doing the job wrong anyway. What a joke. They can keep on hassling.. cuz we will be working anyway.. what a waste of time!

I agree with you completely. Presently I am a recalled Mechanic with American Airlines and represented by the AFL/CIO affiliate union TWU. TWU is in bed with the evil Corporation and I have felt the devastating blow of organized crime that is allowed by our Democracy. It promotes laziness, tardiness, and lack of loyalty (except for those who prefer the first two characteristics I mentioned). Would you be able to refer me a lawyer to go against AA and TWU. Any direction would be greatly appreciated.

    To Bob-
Ahh, you can still build skyscrapers, teach children and have professional sporting events without unions. What’s your point?

  7. Dan O. says:

Glad to see you’re still getting comments after 2 years.

Hey Union Whores: Union or non-Union have NOTHING to do with skill sets.

Just read the comments from the majoruty of Union Joe’s who commented here and you get the mental agility of the average union worker.

Unions basically exploit their members to get what they want from them with abosolutely no intent on properly representing them. SEIU is among the worst. See, I used to work for SEIU and I know what we were told to do with out members. We were to collect political action, tell them this was the only way they could really change their lives (BTW politics is extremely important and more folks should vote) all with the intent of filling andy sterns need for a cabinet post… I mean folks pay union dues to be represented right?
BTW… SEIU is the worst hypocrit around…they absolutely refuse to allow their own staff to form unions and be represented… a few locals have them but, most locals would be put into trusteehip or disolved before staff union could be formed… they form call centers to “provide better representation” however, it is a cheaper way so more money can be spent on politics…..

  9. MY LOCAL BLOW'S! says:

I worked non-union for 20 year’s before my company was ORGANIZED ! In the last six year’s I’ve worked a total of three with my union. All I have to do to secure a steady job is to go on the road to any other state. That is what my UNION is doing for me. Leave my family,go to another state, make less money for the same work, pay to live somewhere else and send everything else back home so my family can live without me. This UNION sold themselves to me and my family as being a good thing, job security from the EVIL non-union shop’s. What a crock of shit! I’m a man that happen’s to love his wife and his family, if we wanted to live apart, we wouldn’t be a family , we’d be just another statistic – divorced. I can take my family with me to work in another state WITHOUT YOUR HELP. My local totally LIED when it told my family it was a good thing. Before the UNION I never knew how to file for unemployment, now, I could walk ypu right through the whole proceedure. My experience with this organization is it benefit’s an inner core of people you know, the ass kisser’s, the relatives and those who are destined to kiss ass.God forbid you just be good at your job, show up on time and pass a random drug screen, MY UNION DOESN’T WANT YOU! If you are a slacker, asskisser and can’t pee clean without your buddies piss, then Local 98 is looking for you.

  10. SFC Brown says:

There is no “we” in unions, just “u” and “I”. Unions are self serving bottom line. They do not care about worker safety, in fact some unions (ironworkers, masons) forced OSHA to give them special exemptions to work unprotected, ie. subpart M and R. My biggest complaint is that in the Northeast there is no right to work laws, freedom of choice is gone. I would also like to see laws that would restrict unions from working for political parties and donating money to them.

  11. Kris B. says:

With the nursing shortage in this country, I believe that unions are necessary. They are pushing for lower patient to nurse ratios, increased on the job safety and better wages. These all benefit the patient. But what I am frustrate with right now is that there is an important step being missed and that is Nursing Education. The educators are the ones who are payed less than if they were at a facility or hospital. It is because of the instructor shortage that less students are accepted into nursing programs and so on down the line. However, with the unions pushing for better work environments, skilled care givers may actually stay in the field rather than quit.

  12. john says:

There are always extreme polarities and they have their positive and negative qualities. They are polarities that pull in either direction.

If you take away the Union’s pull towards better working conditions that may seem “extreme” to us, the stronger pull will inevitably be towards the cold, hard capitalist side which also seems “extreme” to us.

I guess we need to define who we are. It’s easy to be principled when you are comfortable, but when things get rough we will wish we had the Union. Negotiating is built on presenting the most or the least and trying to meet in the middle. Take the Union out of the picture and meeting, and ultimately living in the middle won’t be so prosperous.

  13. Bryann Huffman says:

Unions are nothing but a bulling employment agency bent on keeping worthless people that think they are over worked and under paid. Seeing Chicago street workers hard at it with 10 supervisors and one worker???? Give most of the American people a chance to work and get rid of the over paid ones. For each union person let go 2 could fill the shoes and double the work for the same amount going out by the employer. Leading to increased productivity and increased safty, and annual bonus’s with the two watching each others back. The one unoin worker may watch others work but does anything get done?

  14. Joe says:

My biggest problem with unions is their canine loyalty to “seniority”. Merit, hard work, or education mean nothing in a union shop. The union wants all benefits given to the most senior employee, with nothing else given consideration.

I work in a union shop, and our most senior people decline all non-mandatory training, have poor attendance, and spend more time in the breakroom than performing useful work. The real work is performed by ambitious younger workers, who make themselves available, show up to work on time (and sober), and quickly learn every new task. However, when it comes time to choose overtime shifts, choose vacations, or get promoted…the union will use its muscle to reward our older non-contributing bums.

Keep in mind that our company pays a premium for these senior workers who contribute little or nothing to the bottom line. Of course they can never be fired either. The young workers, who haven’t had their work ethic beaten out of them by the union, get frustrated and quit or transfer to salaried non-union jobs.

Any wonder why companies without unions are beating the hell out of union companies? As a reluctant union employee, I don’t. For me, union dues are just a tax I pay to not have my car keyed. Screw unions!!!

iam a contractor who hires unionworkers, and all i have to say is that most of theis guys are a joke!! they show up on a job they dont give a shit about their employer, quality craftmanship,or even putting in g full 8hrs. theis guys show up on a job and the first thing out of their mouth is “when is payday” or “can i have a one day check because iam broke” what a joke ! and i have never had a guy show up with all his tools, and if they can see the end of the job they work slower!!and the hall doesnt send you the most qualifyed person they just send you th next guy on the list, haha and if you complain the hall just says oh well you hired them..unions have outlived their need, with all our labor laws and osha WE DOND NEED THEM ANYMORE !!! they enable their members to not give a shit about anything but their next paycheck

  19. Union In Chicago Cause I have to be... Not because I want to be says:

I love the these union guys who complain about jobs and services going overseas. while they get paid 8 hours pay for a 6 hour day and dont realize that the money they see on their check is only half that the employer is paying.

I am an IBEW contractor. Every one in my office gets excellent health care coverage. I cover an average family of 4 for about 650.00 a month.

My union techs get health care 1/2 as good as what my office workers get at a cost $1600.00 per month.(Paid to the union) married or single. To top that, if they work 5 years straight paying these extra high fees and get laid off, they are getting a cobra form from the union within a Month.

Wake up… Union are bad for the worker and worse for America.

Unions suck money from there people who really dont know any better. Thats why the number one rule for getting into a union is to act dumb for your interview because they are really not interested in people that can think for themselves.

  20. BDUB says:

I worked in the Carpenter’s Union for two years and went through their apprenticeship program. Not only were the employers paying for the training we were receiving but so was the State of Alaska and the Department of Labor(YES WIth tax dollars). Well, they figured they still were not bringing in enough money for this over-inflated training center so they decided to rape the retirement of its own members. All new apprentices had to forfeit most or a portion of their defined contribution dollars for 5 years to this place. Over 5 years it came to 22 thousand dollars. With compound interest, given a 25 -30 year career that could mean hundreds of thousands out of ones pocket when you need it. Not the mention the fact why would the union training center need an additional 750k a year from their members for??? What a joke….you basically have a group of idiots who had squandered their own retirements based on low contributions and bad investments and leaving nothing for their apprentices. Thanks Stan Hunt and John Palmatier. I declared bullshit and left that whole thing to the idiots who could swallow that pill.

I started writing this to rant my own frustrations with unions, however I see some people summed it up quite nicely already. the fact that this post was started in 2007 and people still post is a big indicator that something should be done and should have been done years ago.

I’ll briefly describe my mothers story – 5 & 1/2 years working and paying union dues (not that she wanted to), diagnosed with cancer, manager finds out and fires her on erroneous charges ONE WEEK before her surgery, the union DOES NOTHING!!! Does she get reimbursed for all those years she has been paying those blood suckers? No those lazy bums did not even do their job and fight for her.

unions may have had noble causes once and some still advocate for workers, but most are useless.

unions do not belong in the 21’st century!

  25. SgtX says:

I think the mention of unions like the UAW and Chicago’s Operators and Teamsters Unions and where these people are at should sum up that unions have outlived their cause.
